Hidden Agenda Reviews

Murder... Torture... Corruption... The Truth Can Never Be Buried! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
This 1990 thriller is explicitly political, and its agenda is far from hidden. This is the kind of committed thriller that was a staple of 70s US cinema, but there is now virtually extinct. This British exercise is not afraid to name names.

Frances McDormand and boyfriend Brad Dourif are in Northern Ireland, sometime in the 80s. They are human rights lawyers, investigating human rights abuses by the Royal Ulster Constabulary. Dourif heads off for a mysterious early-morning rendezvous, and is killed by Government forces. A cover-up occurs, but investigating detective Brian Cox is having none of this, and keeps digging. A conspiracy is uncovered, one whose goals extend far beyond Northern Ireland.

A smart script, excellent performances, and a chilling premise. Fans of the House of Cards series or A Very British Coup are strongly advised to check this out.

The sound is 2.0 surround, but you'd be hard-pressed to tell. There are essentially no rear sound effects at all. And since the music is fairly restrained, you'd almost swear the film was mono. The picture (in both 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and full screen) is okay, but no more. Very basic menu, and a trailer. Nothing more sadly.

I really liked the film. The disc itself could be more impressive, but fortunately the quality of the film itself overcomes the shortcomings of the transfer.

Hidden Agenda FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
A taut, intelligent nail-biter that pulls in the audience fast and never lets go, thanks to a lean, plausible script and intense performances from Mc Dormand, Cox, and Dourif, all brilliant players when armed with solid material like this. An overlooked winner. Hang on.
