Guys and Dolls Reviews
Pulsating music score
150-minute of songs and dancing - The music score is beautiful and captivating, especially the chorus part and the songs by the tenor Stuby Kaye (Nicely Nicely Johnson)who sang as well as acted. The 14-year romance of Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine (Ms Adelade) begged sympathy and they sang beautifully. Vivian Blaine eagerly awaited her wedding, often to a comic effect, and enlivened the screen.
It's true that Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons sang "I'll know" too cautiously. Yet in "A woman in Love", their voice were bolder and more confident. They certainly looked very much like their part - a gambler and a pious strict missionary. The story, despite a slow start, took an interesting turn when Sky Mastersn (Marlon Brando) visited Sergeant Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons) at the Salvation Army Centre. From then on, their visit to Havannah, Cuba enlightened the story. Sarah Brown's addiction to coconut milk, hilarious dancing, bar fight and love struck made it a truly romantic moment.
The last hour was witty and a large group of sinners (gamblers) doing what they knew best - singing and dancing. And the most interesting ones are "Luck be a lady" sung in the sewer and "Sit down, you're rocking the boat" in the mission. This movie, despite its flaws, was entertaining and still had much to offer - bountiful and gratifying. I just wish the joy and glee of the crowd at the finale could last longer.
guys and dolls are rocking
Brando can sing!!
Guys and Dolls is proof. One of the all time great musicals and the biggest box office hit of 1955, has Brando as the main lead and he is ably supported by THE VOICE - Sinatra. Now only a mad man will say that Brando is a better singer than Sinatra, but to give Brando his due he sang well and carried of the role brilliantly...like wise only a mad man will say Sinatra is a better actor than Brando.
Guys and Dolls is a very important film in Brando's career. It is the first light hearted movie he made. All his movies before this were heavy dramatic stuff. This is the first movie where Brando is having fun and what fun it was.
Great songs, great acting and great stars...GUYS and DOLLS is 4 star entertainment all the way.
Brando and Simmons along with Sinatra and Blaine are amazing.
