Guilty As Charged Reviews

BEST CULT FILM OF THE EARLY 90's FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
I saw this film during it's brief(one week) run in seattle in 1992 and i've watched it countless times since then on VHS and i'm so glad to see its available on DVD. This is one funny, funny dark comedy; Rod steiger gives a great performance as a religious nut who has taken it upon himself to capture escaped, pardoned or paroled murderers and holding them in his private dungeon under his meatpacking plant until they see the errors of their ways and then putting them to death in his homemade electric chair. this film spares no one: right wing death penalty advocates, left-wingers, bleeding heart liberals, politicians, police and criminals. that's what i loved about it: it skewers EVERYONE and it's very controlled and actually sort-of subtle! it has a great score, a great cast(wait until you see Issac Hayes as the demented preacher/assistant to Steiger!)and absolutely fantastic sets and cinematography. And Rod Steiger, who always committed 100% of himself to every role, no matter how small the budget or strange the screenplay, should have been nominated for some sort of award because he really gives a magnificent performance here. He somehow manages to make his character funny, sad, sweet, righteous, warped and malevolent-- sometimes all in one scene! This film deserves to be played at art houses every Midnight on weekends! Enough with Rocky Horror! let's have a new CULT FILM FAVORITE!

Watts out what you wish for FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
This is a deeply spiritual movie about a man who, after years of suffering and torment, makes his peace with god. Sound depressing? Try out this:
The suffering and torment involves kidnapping paroled murderers, strapping them to the electric chair he's set up in the basement of his meat packing factory, and throwing the switch while the family members of the victims watch.
For anyone that might have turned off, let me appologize. This is actually a dark, satirical comedy, designed to work at multiple levels of wit, emotion, and humor, and isn't affraid to make fun of itself. An excellent film. Rod Steiger provides a marvelous character performance; the sets, lighting, and scenery are outstanding. The camera work and scenery are especially beautiful.
The only sad part about this film is that, as a made for HBO movie, it did not receive any of the advertising or acclaim that it deserved.

And best of all, the movie intelligently argues both sides of the death penalty without being preachy or obnoxious. It is subtle, humorous, and compasionate, while at the same time fun, evil, and satirical of the whole comic-book vigilante genre.
