With a Frenchman in New York
This movie never fails to humor me. I lost my original video so I finally decided to get this dvd.
These two strangers (Andie MacDowell and Gerard Depardieu) couldn't be more oppposites. I love the scenery of the park and the apartment with the lovely plants. It isn't until the end that they learn what the two could offer each other. It still frustrates me that they couldn't stay with each other in the end when they did realize that they loved each other.
Mildly interesting, simple charm define this movie
The film is a small film of modest ambitions, has the production values of a made for television movie, mundane sets, simple camera work, average script, second rate supporting cast and consequently precious few moments that snap or have any verve.
That said, it is not bad movie. Despite being directed by a then veteran director Peter Weir it oddly has the feel of a first effort by an up and coming director.
Andie MacDowell was a new talent then and puts in an absolutely mediocre effort. She appears in some scenes to be reading cue cards. It was probably the best she could do. She hadn't yet found her niche and honed her skills as the girlfriend character that would later be her stock in trade.
For me the most interesting part of this was Gerard Depardieu. He was at the height of his game, not yet bloated by too much alcohol and food. When you see this film keep in mind that it was made in the same time frame as his Oscar nomination for Cyrano de Bergrac. The modest amount of success this film has is due to him. He scrapes along as the outwardly simple but inwardly complex and absolutely unpredictable French immigrant.
