Training is great, but movie falls short in Vietnam
The beginning of this movie is great. It seemed very realistic and showed the horror of traing for the military. The drill seargent gave a great performance and so did private pyle. But, the second half of the movie which was in Vietnam wasn't that good at all. The action was very boring and the scenes seemed like they were just thrown together. I excpected a lot more from this movie.
Good movie with a superb first half
As with Apocalypse Now, whose journey upriver is far superior to the meandering scenes in Kurtz's compound, and the first half of Silence of the Lambs whose brisk investigation is so much better than the long scenes in the basement with Bill, Full Metal Jacket opens brilliantly then levels off. Like these other films, though, the decline is not precipitous enough to ruin the movie. Rather, the great first half carries the rest. An imperfect, but really fine film.
I AM IN A WORLD OF (....);..... JOKER!
Oh man, you remember that? That part was so CRAZY! I first saw this movie when I was around ten. So friekin great! This is definatley one of the best war movies I've ever seen. Although, I am a STANLEY KUBRICK fan anyway.
There are a lot of different portions in this movie, all around the Veitnam War.
First we go to bootcamp and we meet Joker, and his little jewish friend. However for the most part of the bootcamp segment we are introduced to the character forever to be known as GOMER PYLE! This poor guy goes a little nutty around the middle of the film and provides us with that classic scene in the bathroom...
From here the movie centers around Joker, a writer for an American Soldiers newspaper, and his little jewish friend. Our first veiw of Veitnam is that little chicky. "Ooooh, no, me love you too much... me so horny." Veitnamese prostitution was big business back in those days. Our final glimpse is that other veitnamese chicky, a teenager who snipes off half of Jokers boys.
There are a lot of clever film tricks as usual with KUBRICK, and much action and even a little comic relief throughout this picture. The final scene with our boys vs. sniper is very intense and very well done. BORN TO KILL * PEACE. (its the duality of man.)
Any Kubrick movie is well a good investment; many fans don't care as much for this picture.. but I'll say its excellent. Definatley a Kubrick classic.
