"Life Is Like a Box of Chocolates"
This movie was probably the 2nd one which seemed to establish Tom Hank's acting talents. Hanks plays Forrest Gump, the simpleminded hero with a heart of gold. It seems like he's able to go anywhere just by running (and I mean anywhere and everywhere). Robin Wright plays Jenny, Forrest's longtime sweetheart (who has a habit of coming in and out of Forrest's life) and Gary Sinese plays Lt. Dan, whose dreams to die on the battlefield are shattered as Forrest saves his life. The soundtrack covers a long period of time from Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog" to the Byrds' "Turn, Turn, Turn" to Bob Seger's "Against the Wind" along with Alan Silvestri's lovely background music (I'll comment further on the soundtrack in another review). The movie spoofs periods of time including Watergate ("There seems to a problem with the lights at the White House; you may want to investigate"), antiwar protests ("In Vietnam,..." then something "goes wrong" with the mike), and a reference to the "Have a Nice Day" slogan. Forrest also seems to become an inspiration to Elvis Presley and John Lennon.
A Wonderful and Unbelievable Story
This Winner of 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture 1994 and Best Director-Robert Zemeckis, based on a novel by Winston Groom is still considered as one of the greatest and most beautiful movies ever made.
Tom Hanks gives an outstanding and powerful performance as Forrest Gump a disabled and mentally challenged boy that grows up to be a successful man accomplishing things most people never do and proving to the world that anything is possible when you have a big heart, positive mind, and people that love you.
The story is told by Forrest himself sitting on a bus stop bench telling it to anyone who listens. A story about a young boy with braces on his legs and a low IQ, but loved by his mama. A boy who grows up to be one of the best players in his college football team, gets to meet the president of the United States, joins the Army and receives a Medal of Honor for his heroism in Vietnam, becomes a World Ping-Pong Champion and starts a big business as a shrimp boat Captain. With his faith in God and mama's words, his love for Jenny, and friends like Bubba and Lieutenant Dan, Forrest will take you on an incredible and unbelievable journey of life and love.
Forrest Gump is a wonderful and heart-warming story that will show you that one person's will can make a difference and change the history and people's lives forever.
"My mama always said Life is like a box chocolates...you never know what you gonna get."
Not for the little kiddies
After looking over pages of reviews there seems to be something missing in the assesments both of those who loved this movie and those who hated it (I couldn't seem to find anyone in the middle)
Forest Gump is unquestionably one of the most technical masterpeices of blended footage you have ever seen or ever likely to see again. It is a feel good movie, especially for those old enough-like myself, who remember these events first hand.
The movie is true to the times in which it is set, but this also means it includes the bad with the good so there is more profanity, drug use, and sexual situations than some might be comfortable with. A certain level of maturity is required to realy apreciate this film and the PG 13 rating is an approriate guide as topics include adult friendships, God, life purpose, incest, HIV/AIDs, and death, both from disease and in battle.
It takes an awfully bright man to act like an idiot and Tom Hanks shines in what may well be the best role of his career. It rates 6 stars are being outstandingly different form the usual hollywood fare.
The two disc set is a must for the special features on production
