"Mama Always Said.."
This movie is bound to be a classic. Forrest Gump is certainly one of those movies that one would like to watch time and again. This timeless and heart-wrenching classic tells the tale of a man, with an I.Q. much below the average, leads a life that one can only dream of. But the irony of it all is that he is not wise enough to understand the value and significance of the life he has lead. And at the heart of the plot lies a touching tale of love, aspiration and dream. Tom Hanks has put in a terrific performance in the role of a lifetime. There is, infact, nothing in this movie that is not likeable - outstanding direction, marvelous acting, marvelous camera-work, memorable dialogues, fantastic music, infact everything in this movie is absolutely terrific. A must see for all ages and all times. One of the finest and delightful movies ever made.
One of the most moving pictures I have ever seen.
The power of this film is truly incredible. Director Robert Zemeckis uses his time-hopping and person-changing ideals that he captured in films like Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Spanning over 30 years of history, Forrest is literally oblilvious to the changes of America, riding them out as we take witness to his brushes with greatness (3 presidents), and his accomplishments. Tom Hanks makes Forrest such a memorable character because we believe his character is real. Probably not until "Chuck Noland" in Cast Away has Hanks been able to recently pull of a live-action role so well (Toy Story's Woody is also well orchestrated, but Woody is a computer actor). This film holds a firm place in my top 10 for a number of reasons, but mainly because it is a reminder of my mom. I was never like Forrest, I could not run like the wind blows, or my IQ did not register a 75, but it was the type of encouragement and moterly love that Sally Field put into Momma Gump that made her so believable. Sadly, 8 months after I saw Forrest Gump, my mom passed away due to cancer, on Tuesday April 4th. To this day, no matter what, Forrest's final scene with his mother still gets me inside. It is something that will stay with me always.
Stupidity Raised To A Standard Of Excellence
Horrible movie bringing to the screen some of the worst ideals and morals of the 1990s as objects of praise. The theme of the movie is that achievements due to fool's luck and sheer coincidence are just as praiseworthy, if not more, than achievements resulting from intelligence, competence, and effort. Altogether a very poor message about what standards of excellence should be in society. Just as with the film itself, appearance is more important than substance; indicating only how, out of pity, we choose to lower our standards of achievement so that others can hide themselves from their ineptitude and feel proud about it.
