Where fantasy, reality and history meet. FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), with his pleasant ignorance and innocence (his IQ of 75), traverses the powerful events of the last 30 years of American history and culture. Forrest himself, as I interpret him, seems to be the physical embodiment of the ignorant and naive America of the 50's, in human form, happening against the fate of the next three decades that would expectedly chew up and spit out anyone in Forrest's shoes. Oddly, not only does he survive the decade's raw dealings but flourishes at most every move. Not the most sober plot but perhaps just plausible enough.

The message in this movie seems to be that if we float aimlessly about as does the feather in the wind, we will will have our successes.

Many of the events in Forrest's life are rather unbelievable. Becoming a U.S. ping pong pro as well as a star on the college football team, a marathon runner, a war hero, a shrimp boat Captain, plus personal historical contributions to music and politics topped with a few presidential handshakes, all add up to real life turned cartoon. And a good one at that. And that is just the assumption one has to accept in order to reap the value from this movie; the Coyote that survives dynamite blasts by the Roadrunner. (Unlike Forrest, the Coyote has a far more clearly spelled-out agenda and really puts himself at risk to fulfill those goals.) For those of us who know that triumph comes through persistence, imagination, reachable goals and strong desire, it may not be too enchanting to try and make sense of Forrest's happenstance-path of "successes."

For Forrest, life seems to just "happen" to him as if he were a "victim" of good fate and fortune. (The box of chocolates?) Great experiences seem to come his way, (like a chocolate/cherry creme) mostly by the "powers that be," and not by a conscious sense of purpose, effort, creativity and clearly defined goals. (There's that word again.) So how is it that this movie would inspire? (You see, the Coyote was riled by Forrest's example!)

In praise of the movie, Forrest's example shows that if we just stay out of our own way, (Do you hear that, Coyote?) great things can turn up; that, being yourself (are you listening?), going with the flow (vrrrrmm) and staying in the moment (Bang!) as things happen, is when a person is really living his/her/it's own life.

Amidst the circumstances of Forrest's life is a love story in the background that brings a more personal note, making room for a good share of the movie's adequate humor and charm. (Now, that animated Coyote has this same humor charm but much more direct for obvious reasons.)

An enjoyable and worthy film, if for this message alone. If you can get past some of its implausibilities you might be convinced it has this value.

And by-the-way, twenty minutes before the endo of the show, the Coyote glared at me, up in a huff; left the theater...in yet another black cloud of smoke; but the Roadrunner turned to me, winked, and...MMBeeeep Beeeeep! So they don't agree... and now you see how I get caught in the middle!

Instant classic! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
One of the first movies I ever saw in theaters, "Forrest Gump" has to be one of my favorite movies ever.
Winner of 6 Oscars including Best Picture, Actor (Tom Hanks), and Director (Robert Zemeckis), "Forrest Gump" tells the story of Forrest Gump (Hanks), a slow-witted but good-hearted young man growing up during the 50's and 60's. His life spans over many fruitful events: he teaches Elvis to dance as a child, wins the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, competes in a world-championship game of ping pong, opens a successful shrimp business in memory of a friend who died in Vietnam, and invests blindly in Apple Computers, making a fortune. He also meets three Presidents, witnesses Watergate, and runs across the country. And all this is happening while dealing with the love-of-his-life Jenny (Robin Wright), and his cancerous mother (Sally Field). Gary Sinise also gives an excellent performance as Lt. Dan, Forrest's commander in Vietnam, who turns out to be a life-long friend.

"Forrest Gump" is definitely one of the best movies ever made. Full of great acting, sharp directing, and a killer screenplay, see this movie before someone else does!

Tom Hanks' best performance FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
Forrest Gump ( Tom Hanks ) is a decent man that is also mentally challenged. He is raised in the south alone by his mother
(Sally Field), and is in love with his childhood best friend Jenny (Robin Wright). Forrest soon realizes that his ability as a runner is going to take him places. As a college football star he meets John F. Kennedy; as he fights in Vietnam he wins the medal of honor; and as a talented ping pong player, he defeats the Chinese national team causing him to meet and be recognized by Nixon. Forrest goes on to become a succesful shrimp boat captain, and an original investor in Apple conputers. But he still cannot forget his one true love Jenny, who we watch go down a path in the 1960's and 70's that is nothing but trouble. These with all the other memorable events in Forrest's charmed life really provides for a memorable and emotional experience!!

Forrest Gump is one of my all time favorite films. It offers an extremely original story. The script is incredible and offers brilliant and funny dialogue which makes all of the film's actors do a great job. Tom Hanks was very deserving of the oscar that he won for this film. It is the best performance of his career. He truly captured the essence of Forrest Gump with his simple nature, his love for Jenny, and his life in general. Gary Sinese was amazing as Captain Dan. He was actually my favorite character in the film. Robin Wright does an incredible job as Jenny. Sally Fields does a nice job with the limited amount of screen time she has as Forrest's mom. Mykelti Williamson gave the most surprising performance with his portrayal of Forrest's friend Bubba. His endless knowledge about Shrimp will make you laugh and the friendship between Forrest and him is very touching. The film also has excellent special effects. The news reel footage that Hanks' is spliced into is very realistic and convincing. They provide for some of the funniest moments in the film.

Forrest Gump is a true masterpiece that offers brilliant performances, a detailed look at our nation's history, an incredible script, and mind blowing special effects. It is truly one of a kind! The DVD is great. The 2 disc special edition really lets you see the film in a whole new light! It offers 5 unbelieveable featurettes that go into the making of the film, the makeup, the sound effects, the production design, and the visual effects! Not to mention the presentation of the film is top notch. If there was one film that you were looking to own on DVD, it should definately be Forrest Gump.
