Grounded...Firefly Gets Another Shot In Space And On DVD
I was looking forward to Joss Whedon's "space western" series, Firefly, with great anticipation, when it was announced for fall 2002. After all, Whedon has a pretty good track record, when it comes to television. I was already a regular viewer of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and its spin off series Angel. Both of those examples were proven comodities and were a lot of fun to watch. After Firefly, first saw air, I was intrigued and thought this might mean Whedon pulled off a triple crown or hat trick, to over use the sports metaphor. And then FOX changed the episode order, did a poor job promoting it, and put it on Friday night, when very few folks were home to watch it. I have to say, that as much as I was pulling for it, I kinda knew its days were numbered by episode 8...
Firefly tells the story of the cargo ship Serenity, and her rag tag crew of misfits, who are trying to find their way in the galaxy and make lots of cash as well. Commanded by Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), who is a cross between Captain Kirk, and Han Solo. Their mission of commerce is made more difficult, with the arrival of a passengers, who are wanted by the Alliance totalitarian government. Now on the run, they soon discover that keeping a low profile isn't as easy as it sounds.
The crew also includes the Warrens (Gina Torres and Alan Tudyk)--a married couple, exotic beauty Inara (Morena Baccarin), Kaylee Frye (Jewel Staite), who knows the inner workings of the ship, Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin, Who's great by the way) as a tough talking muscle head, who thinks only of himself, a religious Shepherd named Book (Ron Glass) and the pair running from the authorities, Dr. Simon Tam (Sean Maher) and his sister River (Summer Glau). The cast has pretty good chemistry and the show works even better on DVD, then it did on the network. After watching the entire series again, including 3 episodes not aired, I am convinced that if FOX had given it more time, it might have done better. The show certainly has many of the same Whedon trademarks, continuing plotlines, plenty of humor and solid adventure. The special effects are pretty good too, and shooting the show in widescreen, gives it a feature film llike quality.
Given the show's brief run, I was surprised at how packed the 4 disc DVD set is, rivaling the bonus material on any Buffy or Angel full season box set. Half of the series 14 shows have audio commentaries and unlike Buffy/Angel, cast members join in. Most of these tracks are fun and informative. The best though, feature Whedon and Fillion, especially on the pilot 2 parter, called Serenity. There's also a fairly generous amount of deleted scenes from the episodes Serenity, Our Mrs. Reynolds and Objects in Space. Too bad the quality is sub parr though. The three featurettes-"Here's How How It Was: The Making of Firefly," "Serenity: The 10th Character, and "Joss Tours The Set" are well produced. You also get to see actor Alan Tudyk's audition, a two minute gag reel, creator Whedon siging the theme song, which is um...interesting. And speaking of singing, topping off the set, is an Easter egg of actor Adam Baldwin singing "Hero of Canton", that's a bit of fun.
I enjoyed giving Firefly another shot. I liked it even more this time around. I think you will too. Fans will be there for sure
Gone far too soon
Like many fans, I completely missed this series when it aired. I'm certain that word of mouth will boost sales of the DVD set far beyond expectations. The characters are three dimensional, quirky and likeable. Current sci-fi shows like Enterprise or Andromeda constantly leave you wondering why you should care about the characters. Firefly's pilot episode, "Serenity", ensnared me with wounded Kaylee, disturbed River and what's with Captain Malcolm and the companion Inara? It's worth watching. I only wish there were 6 or 7 seasons worth.
You can't take the skies from me
Firefly was a show that came on the heels of Fox's usual brilliant decision-making--right after it cancelled my beloved Dark Angel. I first thought this show would be awful, but I sat down and watched it--and it was love. Truly. It's rare to find a show that can be taken seriously that also made me laugh out loud in every episode. The writing was extraordinary, and the actors/actresses were absolute gold. It was really like watching a movie each time around. Yet again, Fox shot itself in the foot and iced another good show. Nonetheless, at least the DVD is soon to come. At least they had the decency to do that. Come on, sing it with me: "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand. But I don't care--I'm still free. You can't take the skies from me..."
