Only the best
Firefly is only the best SF series to hit television since, well,
since ever.
Fortunately it's been resurrected on DVD. Fox cancelled the series even as it was winning an Emmy. Figures. Firefly is a welcome relief from the hoary Star Trek franchise: smart, surprising, and funny.
"I know something ain't right."
"Sweetie, we're crooks. If everything were right, we'd be in jail."
It's a western set in outer space, about 500 years hence. The premise makes sense if you consider that the inhabitants of newly-terraformed worlds should (must!) rely only on the sort of very simple technology that they can make and maintain for themselves (horses & buggies, six-shooters), even though a very advanced technology (spaceships) is required to get them there in the first place.
Malcolm Reynolds is not James Kirk.
"I'm thinking Whitefall. We'll talk to Patience."
"Sir, we don't want to deal with Patience again."
"Why not?"
"She shot you."
"Well, yeah, she did a bit. Still.."
And Serenity is not the Enterprise.
"Come on, you haven't seen most of it, let me show you the rest. And try to see past what she is, and on to what she can be."
"What's that, sir?"
"Freedom, is what."
"I meant: what's that?"
"Oh. Just step around it."
And then there's the music. I predict that when you've reached the last episode, you'll watch the whole thing through again, just for the music. And maybe a third time. And a fourth. And...
Thank goodness for this DVD
I tried to watch this series when it was airing, but could not keep up on all of the scheduling changes.
Fortunately, the DVD not only has the episodes which I missed, but it also presents the series in a rational order.
This is great sci-fi.
An Eternal Monument To Fox's Loss
Firefly, a short-lived science fiction series which ran on Fox in Fall of 2002, is a true marvel. Despite not initially airing the pilot episode which properly introduced the ensemble of 9 main characters, despite airing the engrossing continuing storyline out of order, despite frequent preemption for sports events, despite unfairly characterizing the show as "cowboys in space", despite cutting the series off before its three best episodes were left unaired, the twelve aired episodes are now an international fan-favorite classic TV series. The series revolves around the hi-larious, heartbreaking adventures of the crew of the tramp freighter Serenity in the 2500s as they struggle to find their place in the (uni-)'verse after an interstellar civil war. All fifteen filmed Firefly episodes, including three never aired in the U.S., are on this DVD along with a gag reel and many cast and crew provided interviews and extras.
Despite Fox's unfortunate decision to cancel Firefly, the series lives on now in DVD, perhaps in a big-screen movie that is under serious development for 2004, and hopefully someday in additional Season Two future TV episodes. Get this DVD. You will not be disappointed.
