Clever, charming adaptation of folk tale
"Ever After" is an updated Cinderella story that works. The intelligent screenplay, great casting and classy music/scenery make this movie, in my opinion, the best Cinderella movie to date. Drew Barrymore turns in a luminous, strong performance as the servant-turned princess Danielle, with refreshingly updated points, i.e. her scholarship, swordsmanship and rescue of Prince Henry. Dougray Scott does brilliantly as the sought-after Prince Charming, and adds dimension to his character, with a slightly rakish, sometimes haughty demeanor. The banter between him and Danielle has great chemistry, reminiscent of the same between Rhett and Scarlett in "Gone with the Wind". Anjelica Huston of course portrays the evil stepmother perfectly - not only pure evil, which she does turn out to be, but tinged with a reluctant affection for her stepdaughter.
I highly recommend this movie. The DVD version is my only complaint - bare bones, just a trailer, no behind the scenes look, no commentary, nothing. For such a classy film, viewers would have appreciated more features in the DVD.

Terrific Modern Version of Cinderella
Ever After is one of my favorite films. I saw it when it came out and I've just watched the DVD. It tells the Cinderella story in a new way. This Cinderella is gutsier, braver and more believable than the classic story book story would have us think. She knows about equality and independence and she's outspoken. Her Prince Charming is really cute, too! Angelica Huston's Wicked Stepmother is a lot of fun, though the viewer wants to protect Cinderella from her. I highly recommend this movie.
