Edward D. Wood, Jr. Meets Orson Welles
As close to perfection as this American life allows. Anyone alive fifty years ago, who got pulled into the black-&-white rattle & hum of fabulist phantoms coming from a plugged-in box in the living room, will meet this movie like an old forgotten friend. Burton's Ed Wood is a friendly old freak show. Depp's Ed Wood is a friendly old freak who has every hopeful twitch of the hopeful Fifties vamping on the edge of the age of anxiety.
Astounding!
I thoroughly enjoyed this look into the life of Ed Wood. Johnny Depp was excellent. The thing he did best was present this aura that Wood thought everything he did was genius, even though it wasn't. When Wood improvised just so he could get Plan 9 from Outerspace done, he seemed to have a genius glow in his face, even though it looked like crap. The film, not his face. It was very amusing.
Martin Landau was awarded an Oscar for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi, and that's deservedly so. The first time I saw the movie, I didn't even know it was Landau! Of course I was much younger, but the voice, the facial expression, the movements; he really transformed for this role.
If you see the finished product of Plan 9 from Outerspace, after seeing this movie, you find yourself looking for all the tiny, yet humorous flaws in it. Don't get me wrong; Plan 9 is still cool, but it was pretty cheesy, and Ed Wood seemed to highlight its shortcomings.
A brilliant film about a disturbing guy!
If you've ever watched a really, totally awful film, and asked yourself WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE COULD POSSIBLY THINK THIS GARBAGE IS A GOOD IDEA? -- Well, THIS film ... this totally, wonderfully, brilliant film ... will explain it all to you!
Johnny Depp is great as Ed Wood, but Martin Landau steals every scene he is in as Bela Lugosi. Don't miss it!
