A stellar cast in a bad movie
With the recent death of legendary Marlon Brando, I've been watching his films lately as my own way of paying respects. Brando's talent was near genius that almost none can surpass. Oh sure, there are a handful of actors in certain roles who are as good or better as he was. However, the overall quality of acting in each of Brando's films, taken collectively, is unsurpassed. Johnny Depp is one of, if perhaps the only, actor of this generation who could maybe eclipse Brando. That they were friends solidifies this premise.
That said, I was so excited to see Brando, Depp, Dunaway, and Selena (albeit in a very small singing part) together in one film. But I must say, after watching it, I was disappointed. It wasn't Depp's accent (he did convincingly well) but the plot - if you want to call it - that was a big let-down. Brando is sweet and charming; Dunaway is beautiful as ever; and, of course, Depp is ultra suave and sexy as Don Juan. The movie starts off kinda cute, you wonder where it's going to go, and then - boom! The let-down. What was the point of this movie? I just didn't get it. Was it lust or love? Even if it was either or, I just came away thinking, "Who cares?"
If it weren't for the phenomenal actors, this film wouldn't have made a pile of beans. What a flop and a disappointment.
Well, there is just one more thing I'll admit that is good about this flick: the theme song. Bryan Adams' "Have you ever really loved a woman" is a most beautiful love song and it will remain my favorite. It ties in well with the movie with its Latin guitar strings.
The music and the actors themselves make for this movie, but the storyline is disappointing and disbelievable.
Love is MAGIC!
Some reviews I've read are by people who are either too young to know what love is or too immature to "get the point" of the the film. This movie was cast from old and new "Hollywood Royalty". So if all you ever saw Brando do was "Godfather" you can't realize what a true legend he IS! For me, this is by far the most charming role Brando ever did. In spite of many problems and weight gain, he was respected by fellow actors. Any actor of stature would've jumped at the rare opportunity to work with him. This wonderful fable was the right vehicle and I'm glad he was persuaded to do it. Brando and Dunaway are perfect. Depp is his usual off- beat nut job.
Dunaway and Brando play a mature couple who have almost lost the "Magic" after 30+ years. Because of Depp, they get it back. Dr. Mickler learns a lot from his patient who is "crazy in love". The film requires the suspension of
disbelief. Trust this one to take you out of the everyday. It will renew your spirit!
Why mess with love?
It's hard for me to even begin to describe how this movie made me feel. First of all, I got it as a gift from my boyfriend and I knew he'd really liked it so I was looking forward to watching it. That story sucked me in really fast! It's a very nice feeling to see movies still made that actually porttray love as fragile, precious and something to aspire of instead of something to scoff at like some modern "romance" movies would have us, reasonably smart people, think. Here the premise seems so impossible that the story takes advantage of eevryone's initial disbelief.
Johnny Depp's performance as Don Juan de Marco, the world's greatest lover is utterly golden. That alone would be enough to make watching this movie worthwhile. It's so great because it takes everyone in (including the rest of the characters) as mere unbelieving human nature (and we are, most of the time, we gotta admit it) and throughout the story has us doubting whether he might or might not be who he says he is. Not only that, he has us believing in love by the end of the movie, truly believing. The love between Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway is priceless and only increased and cherished by every viewer as the movie goes on and still after it's long since finished.
Ok, so it's not likely to happen in real life anytime soon that you'll encounter the world's greatest lover (or that he'll look as cute as Mr. Depp) but it did do something for my beliefs about love. You work at it years and years to nurture it and make it grow, you treasure it and as Mr. Brando does with Johnny, you leave well enough alone, love is too beautiful to mess with it. You "get" love, that's what it truly is about.
Great performances, wonderful story...see it now!
