Director's Series, Vol. 3 - The Work of Director Michel Gondry Reviews
Worth viewing, for those seeking post-postmodern inspiration.
Ditto what most people have said already about this compilation.
His work reminds me very much of French spectralist composers (Murial, Grisey), who imitated electro-acoustic phenomenon through purely acoustic means. (specifically in the Chem. Bros. video with that girl in the cosmetics dept who keeps tripping, you know...)
My question is, can this stuff be taken beyond the largely "marginal" position of music videos in the art world - that is to say, does it have substance beyond the sheer, enthralling brilliance? (Why is his work wasted on that stupid Australian dance-pop trash? What I would do to see him work with Derrick Carter, Jeff Mills, etc..)
His work and inspiration is very personal, and almost on the verge of precious - it's amazing to see an artist speak so candidly about his work.
I took some guidance from it, and plan to share with other kindred spirits. Hats off to a fellow weirdo who's getting paid to be so...
Michel Gondry
This is a great compilation of his work. I am not a fan of Bjork at all and there are about 5 or 6 of her music videos on this DVD. There are also a few French performers on there. Even though I can't understand what they are saying, the videos are still done well.
