Video Circus
A camel is a racehorse designed by committee and that was impression 1 I received from this movie aimed at the 12 to 16 year old market but throwing bones to the afficianados. The budget for this film at 142 million seems like a bargain considering the fantastic scenes until you realize the trade-off was authenticity and believability. For me the absolute best scenes were the ones involving actor face to face interventions : John Cleese's new Q and Brosnan, the fencing duel with the villian that got 'out of hand', Bond's interactions with Halle Berrie & the cool female MI6 betrayer,& Judy Dench. I wanted alot more of that but instead I got ludicrous, gratuitous, overly fantastic-to hyper depressing special effect after special effect after special video effect. For one the hovercraft scene which comes early goes on for too long and is filmed darkly. Compared to 'The World Is Not Enough's' opening scene with Bond chasing a brunette babe through the bays of Switzerland in a Q boat, and then falling off her exploding hot air ballon to a pavillian below. I'm sorry but the hovercraft scene bombs in comparison ! Halle Berrie in theory makes a better bond girl than Denise Richards. She's smaller than Denise but man does she ever fill out that orange bikini ! I believed Halle as an American spy more than I believed Denise as a nuclear physicist tho but either 'belief' was crucial. The acting: I give the nod to Halle(again not a crucial point). When Jinx does a backward swan dive off a 150 foot cliff ... now that was good ! You never saw it coming. Halle's character 'Jinx' commits a cold blooded assasination early in the move which ruined her 'good girl' status for me. That scene was disturbing to me on a few levels. If 'Jinx' had turned out to be the 'bad girl' instead of Miranda Frost,(whom I absolutely adored!), that would have made the movie much better for me. I'll mention the Madonna theme song because for me it was a gross miscalculation. 'I'm gonna close my body now' is a repeated line in the song and it's just dumb. She's supposed to be singing about mind control in regard to being tortured. The problem with that is she's not the one being tortured and her song is frivolous which makes lite of a serious issue. The production is annoying. In the soundspace her voice is way upfront and then it's not. It's fading in and out(totally computer generated) like a spastic yo yo with me, the paying customer at the end of the string. 1st impressions are so important in the Bond movies. If it had to be a current pop star I could think of numerous better choices: Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne etc. Both of those stars would have come up with more appropriate music for this 'torture' theme. I liked the disappearing car but it was under utilized. I liked the ice palace, glacier setting and the gene transplant concept for totally altering appearance. I liked the Icarus technology for redirecting the Sun's energy. This is the stuff of cutting edge science fiction. What I did not like was the execution of these great concepts. Not convincing enough or cheesy(Ice surfing sequence). The acting was good. Especially Cleese, Brosnan and the Korea/Britt villian. I absolutely hated this villian so he did his job well!(This actor could have conceivably played Bond but in a more early Roger Moore style). In a nutshell, the action scenes were not entirely believable, went on too long and the movie felt forced and cluttered with too many idea fragments. 'The World Is Not Enough' was a better Bond flick because it had clear focus, a more believable plot and way better timing of key plot points and action sequences. The theme song was acceptably annoying in 'World' while the theme song in 'Die' was annoying and inappropriate.

Mojito?
This movie is among the 1000 Best Movies on DVD by Peter Travers and I give it 4 starts or 8/10. This is a 007 James Bond movie, with all the expectations on it like gadgets, fights, chases, and hot chicks. This time Bond fights the communists from North Korea with some help from the NSA (Berry). It is located in North Korea, England and Cuba. I am not a nostalgic, so I am not going to compare this 007 movie with the old ones, that seems to be a concern among the reviewers. This movie was the last Bond movie for Brosman, was shot in 2002, and to me it's a good movie.
It is true there is nothing new in this movie, but I do not think originality is something we are looking for in 007 movies. I particularly look for action, and this one has tons of it. Also, I like the gadget tricks, and there are plenty of them as well. Regarding the hot chicks, I can't think of any other hotter chick right now besides Halle Berry, whose presence in this movie justifies its price. Bond has another affair with another chick, but Berry takes care of her personally and teaches her how to read (on the plane: "read this b*tch".) This movie comes with a nice DVD case and a second DVD with lots of extras. DVD 1 also includes some audio commentaries that are always worth it. The sound in this movie will blow up your mind if you have Home Theatre system, which I do. I enjoyed it a lot. Overall, a very good movie to have lots of fun and very entertaining that I recommend to everyone (PG13).
