Dick Tracy Reviews
An underrated treasure!
Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty) is the city's greatest detective catching and tracking down criminals like Mumbles (Dustin Hoffman), Itchy (Ed O'Ross), Flattop (William Forsyth, Lips Manlis (Paul Sorvino), Pruneface (R.G Armstrong), Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino) and others. He's also trying to take care of an orphan child named Kid ( Charles Korsmo) and romancing his girlfriend Tess Trueheart (Glenne Headly), there's seems that there's a crime-ring going on thanks to Big Boy Caprice who wants Tracy dead especially a mysterious faceless criminal named The Blank, the seductive night singer Breathless Mahony (Madonna) becomes Big Boy's lover and also falls for Dick Tracy.
A brilliant, complicated and unique adaptation of the classic 30's and 40's comic strip with an all-star cast that also includes Kathy Bates, Charles Durning, Charles Flesicher, Mandy Patikin, Marshall Bell, Dick Van Dyke, Catherine O'Hara, and James Caan. The movie actually brings the beloved comic strip to life in a breathtaking and visual way with the cinemaphotography, the set design and atmosphere to make it look like the comic strip especially some of the bad guys's make-up to make them look just like the comic charactersm, the score by Danny Elfman is superb next to his Batman score.
Al Pacino was just right for Big Boy Caprice and will quite remenscient of Jack Nicholson's Joker, on Hoffman's Mumbles character he will remind viewers of his Raymond Babbit character from "Rain Man". Warren Beatty was definitely born to play the role of the title character, in fact he directs this movie as well and i had such a huge crush on Madonna after seeing this movie when i was a young boy. This film was always a childhood fave of mine that i still love even today and is such an underappreciated movie that deserves more attention.
The DVD has sharp picture and sound but there's no extras at all not even a trailer, just wish a special edition could be made. But still this is one of the best comic adaptations ever that i highly recommended.
Also recommended: "Sin City", "L.A. Confdential", "The Shadow", "Batman ( 1989)", "The Crow", "Batman Returns", "Batman Begins", "Spider-Man 2", "The Boondock Saints", "Scarface", "The Godfather Trilogy", "Goodfellas", "Dark City", "The Phantom", "Spider-Man", "X-Men 1 & 2", "The Punisher ( 1989 and 2004)", "A History of Violence", "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "Donnie Brasco", "The Mask", "Hellboy", "Road to Perdition", "Daredevil" and "Casino".
ONE OF THE BEST
I collect comic book/superhero movies and I almost forgot about Dick Tracy. So the very next day I had to buy it. This movie is great. Way ahead of it's time. I can see where Sin City got its influence. I loved the set designs, the costume designs, all the primary colors like a real life comic strip. The make-up for the villains is off the charts. One fantastic film. Just wonder how this movie would look if it was filmed just like Sin City or the much talked about coming soon Spirit film. Awesome. Hopefully there will be a Dick Tracy 2 or a new version.
I only rated this DVD/movie 4 stars for a couple of reasons. Most of the cool villains die in the first 5 minutes and then the rest die by the end of the movie. Even Flattop (one of the best villains in comic history) I would of loved to see Dick Tracy 2 only feature Flattop. Also, there are no special features. Where's the History of Dick Tracy documentary. Not here. Oh well, still a great film and worth the money.
A Loyal Fan.
