Dick Francis Mysteries - Twice Shy / Blood Sport / In the Frame Reviews

Ian McShane as Dick Francis Detective FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!

It's unfair to say Ian McShane is the best part of these three stories, TWICE SHY, BLOOD SPORT, and IN THE FRAME, but it may be true.

That in no way is meant, nor should it, detract from the excellence of this filmed series.

I have this set and the THE RACING GAME series of DVDs. Though they are years apart in their filming, I would not want to do without either.

Since there is so little available on the Dick Francis stories, I'm thankful for the three full length stories in this set.

Again, for any Dick Francis reader though the stories are changed abit, I would recommend them for enjoyable viewing. I'm a fan of Alistair McLean books, and when he would write a book for the screen he oft times changed the content. At first that troubled me, but later I began to wonder: did the later writing represent more closely what he originally intended. So when an author changes a book for it to appear on the screen, I can now be more acceptable. Some people many not be that way.

But these are very enjoyable to watch.

Fun stories but poor quality transfer FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
As others have said Ian McShane is fun in the lead role, and Patrick McNee makes for an entertaining (if slightly wooden boss cum side kick in two of the stories).

Things have changed a bit from the books but I'd guess that is mostly to do with the Irish/Canadian influences on location filming!

The style of filming and music is rather dated now but that doesn't detract from the entertainment too much.

What does detract from enjoyment is the DVD transfer quality. It looks and sounds as though it has been produced from an old VHS recording. Do you remember the slightly wobbly audio on VHS prior to the introduction of NICAM ?? Well that is what the sound often sounds like. The pictures are grainy and in 'Blood Sport' there were obviously some tape tracking issues or tape damage as there are a few brief episodes where there are distortions and interference typical of a poorly tracked VHS tape.

Overall I have given it 3 stars because the stories are worth watching but the audio and visual quality of the DVD transfer pulls down the score for me.
