Destination Moon Reviews
the genesis of serious science fiction on film
whoever might be credited as director of this movie, we all know that this was the first feature film directed by the immortal george pal, after years of the puppetoons. with a script by science fiction immortal robert heinlein, this remains one of the most intelligent of the sf films of its era. spectacular art direction too by chesley bonestell. if i ranked the 10 best sci fi movies, this would certainly find a spot.
Not Much Fun
This movie can be broken down into 3 parts. In the first 30 minutes the scientists are trying to sell the concept of space travel to private businessmen. It is done very much like a documentary. We are even shown a cartoon in which Woody Woodpecker helps to teach us about rocket science. The next 30 minutes, probably the most entertaining, is the actual take-off and trip to the moon. The final third is the landing and exploration of, you guessed it, the moon.
Considering that this was being filmed in 1949, a full 20 years before an actual moon landing, it's pretty remarkable. But as entertainment it is lacking. You've never heard of any of these actors for a good reason. It is not campy fun. There are no aliens or sexy space women. I would think this film would only be of interest to science fiction buffs who can appreciate it as a milestone of the genre. It also doesn't help that technically the look and sound of the transfer is not good.
