If only horror movies were (more) like Deranged!
If you're into "underground" or "old school" horror, like myself, I'm certain you'll find Deranged one-of-a-kind! I'm gonna "reserve my comments" on Motel Hell-since "it's been a while."
Deranged is a grisly tale based on a true story...Motel Hell is a turkey of a movie but somewhat entertaining.
"Deranged" is loosely based on the life and kills of Ed Gein. The acting is fairly decent and the movie is somewhat creepy at times, but "Deranged" lacks a horror movie atmosphere. That said, there are quite a few disturbing scenes in this movie and the movie is a good reminder of the kind of people that exist in this world today.
For those that are interested in Ed Gein, I highly recommend that you also check out the movie called "Ed Gein", which is a bit different factually, but is also based on the life of the infamous necrophiliac and deranged sociopathic killer...however, I am feel compelled to mention that I find "Deranged" to be a more entertaining movie than "Ed Gein". For those of you who are ignorant about Ed Gein, you will find it interesting that the motivations behind "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Psycho" were largely due to the strange life of Ed Gein.
What can one say about "Motel Hell"? It's a turkey of a movie, but it's not bad for the horror fan who likes his movies with human flesh as the main course. "Motel Hell" is a dark comedy/horror movie about a farmer and his sister who have a special recipe in their "meats". Personally, I prefer the original "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" when it comes to the desecration of human flesh, and because it is one of the scariest movies of all-time while "Motel Hell" is definitely one for the all-time turkey movie list...still, I've seen a whole lot worse, and quite frankly, you just can't go wrong with Farmer Vincent's meats or with Motel Hell, even if he does use preservatives. Also, look for a really good chainsaw fight towards the end and I look Farmer Vincent's mask!
Overall, I give these two movies and the DVD a good TWO STAR rating which means that the DVD is "fair" as far as its merits presenting the emotion of horror in a sophisticated horror movie audience...definitely nothing to write home about.
