Seize the day!! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
A film unabashedly romantic and in love with the concept of "soul mates". And why not? Is love merely a product of genetic attraction or blind chance? Jaglom accepts the idea of "soul mate" as a premise, indulges in a little mysticism, effectively utilizes an old standard (The White Cliffs of Dover) dripping with nostalgia, and in the process delivers a film that will be revered by those who are believers and reviled by those who remain skeptics. "Paris? How cliche!" or "Paris because it had to be!" Dana and Sean are soulmates but Dana is engaged to Alex and Sean married to Claire. Both relationships could be described as happily content, but once Dana and Sean discover each other, being content suddenly seems empty. And so they are confronted with a dilemma: seize the day or turn away. In the film Citizen Kane, a reporter searching for the significance of "Rosebud" to a man that had everything is told thus: "One day, back in 1896, I was crossing over to Jersey on a ferry, and as we pulled out, there was another ferry pulling in, and on it there was a girl waiting to get off. A white dress she had on. She was carrying a white parasol. I only saw her for one second. She didn't see me at all, but I'll bet a month hasn't gone by since, that I haven't thought of that girl." And this coming from an old man! Jaglom asks the question, "What if that girl was that boy's soulmate?" And then the follow up , "Should he have seized the day rather than wonder his whole life about what ifs?"

great premise, not so great execution FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
For lovers of romantic films, the idea sounds great: A mysterious woman gives another woman a brooch that will lead the recipient to her future true love, a true love that will reignite a flame of love and passion that was first ignited a generation before. Unfortunately, (although typical for a Jaglom film) much of the movie is given to meaningful babble that in this film serves only to draw out the ultimate conclusion, a conclusion that could have come a lot earlier, or at least with more imagination. It doesn't help that Victoria Foyt, while a dream to watch and fantasize about, begins to truly annoy with her whiny interpretation of the female lead. It would be nice if the film were shelved and the sound track were released; the soundtrack being a wonderful compilation of truly inspired, vintage romantic music, and well performed at that.

An Old-Fashioned Love Story for Cynical People FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
Deja Vu is a wonderful movie! I saw it in the theaters over a year ago, and I have been awaiting its release on video. It's a story about two cynical 90s people who meet and know that they are destined to be together. But not in the silly, Hollywood, Sleepless in Seattle kind of way. These characters are just as cynical as most of us are about romantic destiny. It's not supposed to REALLY happen. It's supposed to be something that we only see in the movies. BUT the strong pull of emotions and, ultimately, more cosmic forces, draws them together. This is an extremely well written and acted film that examines our insecurities about love and destiny without insulting our intelligence.
