Hysterical and innovative film-noir satire!
This review is for the 1999 Universal DVD.
Steve Martin stars as Rigby Reardon, a 1940's Los Angeles private eye who takes on a job for Juliet Forrest (Rachel Ward), a beautiful young woman who recently became a widow. Reardon is hired to find out if her late husband really did die by accidental causes or if he was murdered. Reardon's given some clues and these lead him into some dangerous and intriguing encounters mixed in with plenty of comical situations.
The brilliant gimmick of this movie involves splicing in old movie footage from 1940's and '50's noir films and having these classic characters such as Humphrey Bogart, Barbara Stanwyck and Alan Ladd, interact with Martin and other modern cast members. The results most of the time are nothing short of hilarious. I must have laughed out loud six or seven times at some of this contrived dialogue. The laughs keep coming through most of the movie, although I thought the ending ran out of steam.
The entire film is presented in glorious black and white and is presented in the widescreen format. The picture quality of the modern footage is superb, while the older film segments are decent with no traces of deterioration, but the graininess and lack of sharpness is at times noticeable.

What do you need to know other than the presence of Carl Reiner as either or both of actor and director. The interweaving between this movie and the old film clips used are fantastic and right on the money. Did I mention star Steve Martin? Nuff said.
