Dead Calm Reviews
Dead Dumb
What could have been a good movie got bogged down in stupidity and unbelievability.
Sam Neill is 20 years older than Nicole Kidman and they don't make a good couple.
Nicole's character, Rae, has semi-consensual sex with a strange nut case only hours after he boards the boat under suspicious circumstances (her husband is lost at sea at this point). At one point leading to said sex, Nicole's shorts are ripped off, revealing a surprising lack of underwear. Then, she puts on a robe and goes on deck. You can see she is wearing a thong when she turns around. Woosey!
Later, nut job is chasing Rae through the boat. At one point she is below deck and nut job is looking at her through the skylight. Rae tries to fake him out by simply quickly tilting her head toward the door. He flinches not once, but twice.
At another point, Rae hears some clicking on the ham radio, and instinctively correctly assumes it is her husband on the other sinking boat. Though unable to hear his voice, she timidly asks some silly questions ("will it take 2 hours to sink? 4 hours? 6 hours?") that he clicks a response to. "Hours?" - that's a leak. It's sinking idiot - try minutes!
There is a shotgun readily available (it is blatantly pointed out early on) but requires minimal assembly, yet Rae fails to use it in any of her many opportunities. Ditto flare, ditto speargun (till later) and ditto any heavy blunt head-cracking object. Stupid!
Another scene has an establishing shot of Rae standing on the jib boom holding onto the mast as the ship rises and falls as it slices through the swells. Cut to the closeup of Rae holding onto the mast with one arm while looking through binoculars - with nary a wobble.
At one point, the husband fires a flare 20 feet through a sail at the silhoutte of his wife and the nut case with surprising accuracy. Fake luck!
This movie was nicely photographed in and around nice boats, and professionally made, but it had too many plot failings to really be any good.
GREAT MOVIE
I have always loved this movie. I think it's one of the BEST movies for Nicloe Kidman. I gave it 5 stars for the movie, but I think I should have given it 4 due to the lack of Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and the picture itself is "grainy". When will they re-release this movie in Dolby 5.1 with a better picture resoultion?
