Do we feel bad enough yet? FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
I've got a simple proposition for you.

Either you:

A)take the next plane back to Europe and stay there.

B)give up your house, car. etc.; learn the Sioux language and start living a traditional Indian life style.

or
C)shut the hell up.

Mr. Costner -who obviously grieves for the indian more than any other white man- doesn't show any signs of doing the first two, yet rather shameslessly refuses to do the third. Well, I say talk is cheap. Accept what your culture and kin have done or else stop reaping the benifets thereof.

The real Sioux were themselves aggressive warriors, who had no problems with practicing a policy of rape, genocide and ethnic cleansing upon neighboring tribes. The purpose of their ghost dance was to rouse their ancestors to kill off the whites -ie genocide by other means. If they are sorry about any of this today -and I don't know that they are- it hasn't caused them to turn their backs on their culture and ancestors.

In sum, Dances with Wolves is a technically proficient, comic book of a film. It's the ideological negative of Birth of a Nation (another technically well made film), but with whites playing the villains. It would just be laughed at in saner times (the not very distant future, I hope).

First off, I'd like to say that "Dances With Wolves" was not only a spectacular movie, but a great view into what America was at one time. A time that many people, white or Native American, don't like to talk about.

(This is mostly in reference to the ignorant post from July 28th, 2005).

The Sioux was well-known for being violent toward white settlers, and while it is NEVER right for men to rape women and kill children---their resentment itself is understandable. For God's sake, the whites came out of nowhere and stole everything out from under them because "they never paid for it". There was no need for payment on land that had been their's for thousands of years! But, at the time, apparently the East Coast (which had also been stolen from Natives) wasn't enough, so the U.S. Government went on and robbed the West, too.

While we're on the subject of rape and genocide...how about the U.S. soldiers that massacred Native American reservations in the mid-1870s and '80s? Or earlier than that, when Manifest Destiny began and suddenly there were thousands of white men invading the land and claiming it was their's.

I don't recall ever reading about the government paying for the land, they just took it. Regardless of human life and decency. And it was the same way in the East, back in the late 1830s when President Andrew Jackson ordered the Creeks and the Cherokees and many other tribes to leave so HIS people could have their land. They refused. So he sent SOLDIERS down to herd thousands of men, women, and children from Georgia to Oklahoma. No shelter, ragged clothing, and freezing weather killed not only the Natives, but his own soldiers, too. How can that be justified?

So before we start railing against Kevin Costner for speaking the truth that so many don't want to talk about (although it's greatly praised when people cry about the disgusting slave market in the 1800s), let's remember WHY the Natives were so violent in the first place. If your land was stolen, your women were raped, and your children were killed...don't you think you'd hold a little resentment, too?

That's what I thought.

Now how about YOU shut the hell up?

I saw this movie as a two year old. From then on,horses and Dances With Wolves was all I talked about. It starts out in 1863;the Civil War battlefields of Tennesee.Lt.John J. Dunbar wants to see the last true frontier.Posted to Fort Sedgewick by a drunken Army major,he finds it deserted and is the only one, accompanied by a prairie wolf and his young buckskin gelding.Soon,he comes in contact with the Sioux or Lakota Indians, and they want to know about the many whites pouring into Sioux territory.Dunbar cannot find the words to tell the holy man Kicking Bird,or his adopted daughter,a white woman raised by the Sioux called Stands With a Fist.He earns the name Dances With Wolves and defends the Sioux camp by giving them rifles upon the fear of a Pawnee Indian attack. The innacurrate portrayal of the Pawnee Indians is mainly what minused the last star;a white teamster is killed by Pawnee warriors, when the Pawnee were one of the most friendly tribes to the whites. But the breathtaking buffalo hunt is amazing. The tipis, bridles, saddles, travios, costumes and all period pieces were astonishing.I would recommend this movie to anyone;a classic movie filled with graceful portrayals of the Sioux and an epic of the American frontier.
