Exquisite masterpiece!
This film is very special to me, it touches on everything that is truly important in my life: beautiful love and friendship not just between people but also between people and animals, loyalty & dedication, harmony and victory. The cinematography is breathtaking, the music score is lovely and the cast is absolutely superb, including Cisco and Two Socks. I take my hat off for Kevin Costner's genius as director and actor. The film is difficult one to make, considering the fact that John Dunbar spends a lot of time on his own with no one to talk to, and yet it is very entertaining. The battles are crafted tastefully, the love scenes are stylish with no unnecessary details and the humour is just the right dose. "Dances with Wolves" is an exquisite masterpiece!

They're all Savages anyway!
In response to Nate Volkerding July 28th review and others who think like him. White folks came here and killed up the natives. Period. You can call it what you want. You can blame the victim. But the bottom line is white folks killed the Indians for any reason they saw fit. Dances brings that home in very clear fashion. I don't even think this is a great movie. Good? Yes. Great. I don't think so. White people (not all but most) are forever trying to justify their enslavement of Africans as laborers and the genocide of the Native "Americans". They want everyone either to get over it or pretend it never happened. They should repent for their sins (or more directly the sins of their ancestors). They SHOULD feel bad thatthis has happpened. Unfortunately they probably never will. So, life goes on and we all live happily ever after. Hell is place created for the Devil and his angels. Ufortunately a good slice of mankind is going to end up there as well.

The extended version pulls the movie together
This is a classic to me. While I loved the original, I did not hesitate to buy the extended version.

As usual, I find myself enjoying the extended versions of films much more then the "theatrical cuts". I understand that studios need to keep time to one that "theater goers" will endure. But as I never go to theaters,I find I prefer to watch the film as it was intended to be seen. Often the additional footage helps you to understand the film as a whole.
