Dancehall Queen Reviews
Dancehall Queen
I thought this movie was all that. My boy Beenie Man did his thing!!! The plot was really good. I was actually able to understand the patois after watching a few time. I really encourage reggae fans to watch this movie. It's off the hook!!!
Walk and live, talk and Bumba Clot dead
A story of poetic justice. I have seen this movie multiple times, but I had not watched it in four or five years. I kept reading reviews, and hearing people talk about Dancehall Queen and make the reference to Cinderella. I thought to myself, that is not how I remember it? So I sat down and watched it again.
I guess in terms of getting everything together for the big night, from the dress, shoes, dance routine, hair/wig, etc. etc. there is a feel of Cinderella to the story. The story of rags to riches is very similar to Cinderella. However, there is no prince at the end, no redemption so to speak. Also, in the end, she is still a street vendor. Marcia's life doesn't change so much she doesn't have to go back to her street life style, she just doesn't have to worry about men taking advantage of her family to pay the bills.
Dancehall queen is definitely a wonderful story, which I enjoyed very much. Though I was not a big fan of Larry's character. What a sick twisted old man?!?! I was dying at the dress maker store, when he used his come-on line "hey s_ xy b_tch." That was too funny. I don't think that would fly in our culture as a come on line.
Also, the hair styles (different wig every day by the hair dresser as an example), fashion, and cars from the club (well before pimp my ride) were also fun to see (a definite 80's feel to the style and fashion).
In conclusion, this is a very, very good movie. Dancehall Queen has great character development, great story, plot, story line, plus a strong cultural feel to it (that is a rare addition to a movie that makes it a true delight to watch). I would strongly recommend at least renting this movie once. This movie is a little too strong in terms of sexual content for children, however, appropriate for High school age kids and above.
