Crossroads Reviews

The stunt guitarists role model FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
Let's face it - this movie is Mecca for guitarists interested in modern "stunt" guitar. The comparison with neoclassical rock (Via) & superbly played slide blues (Cooder) is pure genius. The quality of actors vary (the blues crowd are convincing to me but Ralph seems to have only two personas - "annoyed" & "down trodden"). Steve Via looks a bit wooden whilst in acting mode. When playing he looks like every cool guitarist in the world wrapped up into one (I've seen all of his commercially available dvd's, as well as live on stage twice).

The Duel FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
The duel between the boy and the devil's guitarplayer was actually filmed using the hands of Ry Cooder himself (who also wrote the score), taking on Steve Vai, playing Jack Butler.
Only when he remembers the lessons of his Juilliard guitar teacher, he realises he can beat this devilish guitarslinger, he turns to the baroque patterns that finally break Butler up.

One of the best scenes ever shot in a musicfilm.
