Magnificent adaptation of Literary masterpiece!
Director Michael Darlow and screenplay author Jack Pulman's adaptation of the Constance Garnett translation of Dostoyevsky's masterpiece is magnificent. JOHN HURT'S portrayal of Raskolnikov
(despite relatively minor age difference in film characterization of literature's most fascinating anti-hero)is astonishing.Hurt is RASKOLNIKOV in complexity of his repugnant criminal egotism and his agonizingly pitiable guilt. The modern fable of would-be Napoleonic/Nietzschean "ubermensch" who would live...in comtempt of Law of God & men...Beyond Good & Evil is grippingly rendered in three-part, 225 mm mini-series which ultimately pits unconditional Christian Love, and Hope-in-Forgiveness against demonic Will to Power.
CRIME & PUNISMENT's ensemble cast is without false note or bogus Hollywood glamorization. From Dostoyevsky's despised "Poor Folk", to his Possessed intellectuals(Raskolnikov and reprobate "double" Svidrigailov,essayed by Anthony Bate of BBC's "Tinker,Tailor, Soldier,Spy"); to heroic women(Sonia,played by Yolande Palfrey; Dounia, played by Pruella Ransome;and Raskolnikov's mother,played by Yvonne Coulette)comprising Dostoyevsky's incarnation of THE HOLY SPIRIT; to wily,yet ultimately merciful Chief Magistrate, PORFIRY PETROVICH (said to be precursor of America's detective Columbo):the battle-array of characters that proclaim Dostoyevsky as,perhaps,world's greatest novelist is brought to life in all its Russian glory,courage,love and shame.

Hurrah for Frank Middlemass
Frank Middlemass as Marmeladov gives the definitive screen performance of alcoholism in full flower. You may remember Frank in Kubrick's BARRY LYNDON as the snobbish Lord Lyndon who dies of apoplexity at cards while trying to swallow his pills and then Barry marries Lady Lyndon. Middlemass was the definitive snob in that picture. I've only seen the first third of C&P so far but find the show well-done and worthy of the novel. The sense of CRIME comes across hugely, with PUNISHMENT as an immediate aspect of committing the crime, at least in Raskolnikov's case.
