Copycat Reviews
"I am Death and Life"
Copycat sheds light on a serial killer who imitates other known serial killers in an effort to gain fame and immortality.
The acting and the dialogues are rather weak with the exception of Sigourney Weaver who does a good job of trying to cover up for the rest who really do disappoint with their performances, especially Holly Hunter who is much more like a schoolteacher than a police detective. On the other hand the plot and the setting are actually very good, therefore, the potential for a great movie was definitely there if only the actors and writers had made more of an effort.
Overall, far from being a masterpiece, Copycat will provide for an evening's entertainment, and that's about it.
If you're in the mood for some AMAZING thrillers, check out Resurrection, The Bone Collector, Seven, and of course The Silence of the Lambs.
Very taut and fun
The first time I saw this movie was in a hotel room in Moorhead, MN. (Save the Fargo jokes for later).
This wasn't supposed to be linked with "Silence", or even "Bone Collector". Since both of those are original serial killers and dealt with a darker, more morose tone. This is really a paint-by-numbers thriller, but still was enough to hold me in its clutches for the entire time.
"Silence" didn't deal with a who's who of mass murderers and a Top 10 list of infamy as "Copycat" does. Bundy, Bianca, Zodiac Killer...all of them are mentioned, and it's nice to see a film give nods to the *ahem* best known names in American Crime.
In the days of Dr. Phil, Loveline, and Oprah cry-a-thons...it's good to know there are movies out there that still don't really go out and explain away-or try to cure-the criminally unjust minds.
SPOILER: It's evident by the first time we see Foley's home life why he is the way he is...and most people can profile a serial killer or "creepy guy", but for the most part, "Copycat" didn't bonk you on the head to tell me why he was a putz.
Definitely worth a few dollars for viewing on a Saturday evening
