Love and devotion during troubled times... FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
Cold Mountain surprised me. I didn't know if it was going to be like Pearl Harbor, who so many disliked because of the romance bomb that was thrown into the middle of an important historic war event.

I liked the movie. It's simply a great story and shows the love and devotion between 2 people. That and the civil war backdrop adds to the hardship and tenacity that people had to have back then. My breif review of what the movie is about is below.

Based on the novel by Charles Frazier, Anthony Minghella's star-studded Cold Mountain is a sweeping tale set in the final days of the American Civil War. Jude Law stars as Inman, a young soldier who, despite an injury, is struggling to make his way home to Cold Mountain, NC, where his beloved Ada (Nicole Kidman) awaits. In Inman's absence, Ada befriends Ruby (Renée Zellweger), who helps her keep up her late father's farm. Meanwhile, in his travels, Inman encounters a menagerie of interesting folks. Also starring Natalie Portman, Giovanni Ribisi, Donald Sutherland, and Philip Seymore Hoffman.

This Ain't Dixie it's Romania! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
I grew up down south on a farm. I also consider myself a civil war buff. I had already purchased the soundtrack and novel before viewing the "Cold Mountain" DVD, so I was really expecting alot. First of all I could'nt get past the fact that most of the scenes were filmed in Romania! The little main street set looked like a western storefront facade, not a southern town. I really do like Nicole Kidman in movies like "The Human Stain" or "Dead Calm" but this was just too sickening sweet for my taste. Also, I have never heard any southern person speak in an accent like Renee Zelleweger did. It was fake and everyones acting seemed contrived. There are too many long, boring, talky scenes. For people who call this a chick flick, how many of the truly sensitive types cringed when that old lady killed the goat? I also did'nt care for the bird/crow dreams or symbols we were supposed to be manipulated into thinking were omens. I do admit I loved the music, except for the shape-note singing, which I would never associate with being southern and thought it peculiar. Some great talent was wasted here. For a truly great(filmed on location) Civil War drama watch "Ride With the Devil" starring Tobey Maguire and Jewel.

Great Film FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
Cold Mountain is a great film and features a lot of great actors. Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Donald Sutherland, Giovanni Ribisi, and Natalie Portman all contribute strong performances in an actor-driven film. The scenery and direction is top notch and Zellweger's portrayal of Ruby is reason enough on its own to buy the movie.

Cold Mountain gets slow at points, as it elongates minor subplots and quickly presents the Law/Kidman romance, but still the film works. Many complained about Kidman in this film but I thought her performance was good. It is Law and Zellweger who really stand out though. Hoffman is great as always and Portman proves she's one of Hollywood's top young actresses, doing more with her five minutes of screen time than most actresses do in an entire film.

See Cold Mountain to see a film that is well crafted and returns to the tradition of good cinema, where a film has a great story, great characters, great actors, and something to say about life.
