Absolutely wonderful filmmaking... FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
"City of Angels" isn't one of those movies in which you leave the theatre with a humungous smile on your face, laughing all the way to the car while popcorn residue falls from the front of your shirt. In fact, it's possible to really dislike this film right after you see it. I know I left the theatre saying, "They can't do that! They just can't do that!" But after about a week of sitting at stop lights drenched in seemingly eternal crimson and haggling over mountains of bills, certain images work their way into your consciousness, images from the film you saw a week ago, and you can almost feel an angel's hand on your shoulder as you stand in the ten items or less line at Lucky. The beauty of this film, for me, lies as much in the world it creates as well as the story it tells. Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan create an amazing, if improbable, chemistry through which we feel every emotion in front of us; Dennis Franz gives an exceptional performance as the lovable fallen angel; And then there's Andre Braugher, who I believe is one of the finest actors anywhere, period. But the true credit for this film's stunning grace is deserved by director Brad Siberling. The world which he creates is one of angels and humans, but not a world in which those angels play baseball or are obsessed with death. "City of Angels" is about life, and Siberling's angels are appreciators of humans, doing so quietly, and yet with immense strength. The direction of their placement is perfect, and each action of theirs reminds us of an appreciation for humans (and life)that gives Cage's character all the more beauty, and credability in the closing scenes. Indeed, it is the nuances of "City of Angels" which make it so good. The supplemental material on this Special Edition DVD gives us insight into those nuances, and is just another example of why this format should be supported. "City of Angels" is a movie which becomes a part of you. It teaches how incredible the human experience really is. And when you believe that, you can almost feel an angel smiling right at you.

Something about meg ryan! 26th june 2004. FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
No affense or anything, but i don't like meg ryan. Her films are entirely boring, i think she as ruined herself abit by her surgery, and i would feel sorry for any pretty actress who had the same. God bless mine hasn't had anything done.

Life, death, love and hope FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
"I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss of her mouth, one touch of her hand, than an eternity without it. One."

That is Seth's (Nicholas Cage) answer when asked if he regretted giving up his existence as an immortal angel for a brief lifetime as a mortal human. Seth is an angel who has an insatiable curiosity about the human experience. He encounters Dr. Maggie Rice (Meg Ryan) as she struggles to save the life of the man Seth is about to escort "Home". When she appears to stare him right in the eye and declares "You can't have him!" Seth is shocked and in amazement tries to find out who this person is. The more Seth learns about Maggie the deeper he falls in love.

This isn't an "Angel" movie although it does touch on life and death, God and the Heareafter... It's a love story. A love that is pure and innocent, a love that builds between two people who see the inner beauty of each other and are willing to sacrifice it all for each other.
