Amazing as always, but......... FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
Varekai tells the story of Icarus, who flies too close to the sun and falls to the earth, to be welcomed by a cast of strange and amazing creatures. In this show, we see the "Icarian Games" played by a group of Spanish/Italian brothers who use their feet to throw each other in a most unbelievable manner. The Georgian Dance is one of my favorites, showcasing Georgian fighters as they used to defend their homeland in the high mountains of Georgia. A definite highlight of the show, and an example of how Cirque is always searching the world for news and exciting acts. The juggler is unbelievable also, using several different objects to juggle and balance, from ping pong balls in his mouth to hats being thrown boomerang style......you pretty much have to see it to believe it as it is quite simply difficult to describe in words alone. The Grand Finale is spectacular, and nothing much needs to be said, except for the fact that the room for miscalculation or error is close to zero, or serious injury is almost guaranteed.

One thing which should be mentioned is the fact that this DVD (in my opinion) pales in comparison to other Cirque DVD's as the lighting is quite dark. Other than that, the acts are fantastic, though the clown acts leave much to be desired on the DVD. I saw this show live in 2005 and it was much different than I had imagined because of improvements in these two areas. The acts as always are 5 stars, but 1 deduction for the poor lighting and the clowns who were not yet up to par with other Cirque acts. The white light contrasted with the dark simply takes away from the show on the DVD.

Also included on this disc are in-depth interviews, and a preview of the Fire Within Series.

Cirque delivers again FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
Varekai is the culmination of Cirque's ever evolving genre. The haunting melodies pair beautifully with the artfully choreographed routines which mesh nicely to form a cohesive storyline. Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun, is landed in an alternate world of wonder where he finds true love among the eccentric characters. The drama is cut well with humour in the form of a defunct magician and his rather clumsy assistant. Whimsical characters offer both lightheartedness and laughter and acrobats sail through the air while performing seemingly impossible feats. If you haven't experienced Cirque yet, this would be an excellent starting point. A triumph!
