The First Chocolat to EVER give me Goosebumps!!!!!
I am surprised that no one mentioned the inspiration in the story line. There are many to speak of. There is a constant theme of liberation from dogma, the past, repression, and prejudice. An alone woman (and her daughter), with gifts from their Mexican people travel the world sharing them, with the spiritual help of the North Wind and her mother's urn (ashes).

The most touching scene was when the diabetic old woman enjoys her final dinner party, a scene slowed in motion to emphasize the sensuality and fulfillment of delicious food. How does baked chicken with chocolate sauce sound? Her grandson, who she had allowed, against his mother's will to have cake and hot chocolate, discovers her dead body the following morning. She never had to die sickly in an old folks home, but a fulfilled and happy and beautiful old woman who had a touch of a rebel in her. How wonderful!

People learned to enjoy sex, food, simplicity, and love!

Johnny Depp's character learned to have that soulful and beautiful profound pride that ONLY comes when one's people are disgraced, accused, lied on, and unjustly indicated. He and his daughter were refused service in a pub, where the little girl was referred to as a dog.

There was an undercurrent of social change in the film without a the least bit of sentimentality. Liberation can be a beautiful thing and chocolate is a WONDERFUL way to attain it.

Delectable Treat
It was a very wonderful movie with a great cast. The message was clear and brought to life by a magnificant script. It would be worth buying and adding to you DVD collection. Plus any movie,with Johnny Depp, is an A in my eyes. ***************

A Work of Art
Incredible film, incredible acting, incredible story telling, a beautiful work of art, from start to finish. This is one of those films you want to buy and give away to special friends, like an outstanding book.
