Extremely Cute Movie ya gotta Run to!!!
I bought Chicken Run quite a while back and never got around to watching it. I went out of town on Business and decided to take it along, figuring I would finally see what my co-workers had been talking about... It was GREAT! I laughed hystarically at this one... A little about this movie....
Having been hopelessly repressed and facing eventual certain death at the chicken farm where they are held, Rocky the rooster (Mel Gibson) and Ginger the chicken (Julia Sawahla) decide to rebel against the evil Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy, the farm's owners. Rocky and Ginger lead their fellow chickens in a great escape from the murderous farmers and their farm of doom. Chicken Run is a comedy escape drama with a touch of passion set on a sinister Yorkshire chicken farm in 1950's England. The film follows the turbulent romance between two farmyard chickens, Rocky and Ginger, who yearn for freedom and plan a daring 'prisoner of war' style escape. A 'claymation' adventure from the creator of Wallace and Gromit, featuring chickens as the main characters. Ginger is the 'head chick', and she deviously plots to free all the chickens on the farm, preventing an otherwise certain 'Death By Chicken Pie'. After many failed attempts, she meets Rocky, the 'flying rooster', and decides that he holds the key to their freedom.
I would say this is 'RUN' and buy this movie... you will be glad you did!!!!
Egg-straordinary!
This charming and funny film was the surprise hit of summer 2000 and deserves a place in every home. "Chicken Run" deals with the troubles of a flock of chickens on Tweady's Farm, which is about to be mechanized for greater profit. Evil Mrs. Tweady has just invested in an enormous machine which will kill the chickens, skin them, and make them into Mrs. Tweady's "homemade" pies.
When things look their worst, a Yank hero (voice of Mel Gibson) comes cannonballing into their avian roost. Gibson is the never-say-die type and he convinces he can teach the chickens how to escape by flying away. By the end of the movie the chickens do fly, literally and metaphorically, but not in the way you'd think.
"Chicken Run" is not a computer-generated movie. It was filmed in stop-action, a painstaking process similar to claymation, where inert figures have to be moved a tiny, tiny amount and photographed one frame at a time. This film took years to produce, but the quality is up there on the screen.
Don't think that "Chicken Run" is just a kid's movie. There's a lot of throwaway wit that adults (and even grandparents) will enjoy. For example, the most heroic chickens inhabit coop (stalag) 17. And while Mr. Tweady can see the chickens planning their escape, every time he gets Mrs. Tweady to take a look she only sees the birds clucking and pecking. (Think of Gladys Kravitz on "Bewitched"!) All in all, a superior film.
Cute family fun
Chicken Run is great, family oriented film that tells the heart warming story of a chicken named Ginger that dares to dream of soaring with the eagles. Forced to work relentlessly for a rapacious Mrs. Tweedy, Ginger tries desperately to inspire her fellow hens to dream of a better life. Her plans for the future take a positive turn when Rocky, a circus run away, drops into farm and gets railroaded into teaching the chickens to fly. The drama heightens when the greedy farmers decide to stop selling eggs and start selling chicken pies.
The film is filmed using stop motion claymation by the same team that made the popular Wallace & Gromit series. Visually it is incredibly well done, with a plethora of unique and funny characters. The movie does not rely on a bunch of flashy CGI special effects, rather it succeeds with originality and visual depth, making the film a work of art.
Obviously the cute characters and wholesome story line is designed to appeal to a younger audience, but unlike many films, it does so without insulting their intelligence with trite issues and silly behaviour. Funny without being vulgar and action oriented without excessive violence makes it a safe bet for any age.
Adults may not find the film outright funny but it is definitely amusing. Frequent references to other movies and a mature story line help the film reach adult audiences as well as children.
Overall, in sea of mediocre family programming, this film ranks as one of the better.
