Greatly disappointed
Well I loved the book by Joseph Heller even though it can be hard to follow at times. The movie, however, was a huge let down. I did not expect it to be as good as the book, nothing ever is, but this was just bad. The cast sounds great, but the acting too over the top if you ask me. Especially Arkin as Yossarian, he just annoyed me. There were many characters I came to like while reading, but this movie doesn't give you a chance to like any of them. So much of the book is left out, which is to be expected, but it doesn't make any sense if you haven't read it. The anti-war commentary is almost completely lost and it has basically been turned into a comedy. Overall this was a terrible movie, especially considering how good the book was. It gets two starts simply for being associated with the book. Don't waste your money, just read the book.
Good movie from a great book
I saw this DVD in the seven dollar rack this weekend and couldn't resist.
It had been over 30 years since I had seen the movie and I wanted my 20 year old son to see it.
He loved it and I enjoyed it more than I expected to. I still hate flashbacks. They are great if you are doing Rashomon but not so good in this setting. That said the movie is just fine and even great if you hold it up to the stream of drivel out at the cineplex on any given weekend.
So let me be about the 50th person to point out that it is not as good as the book but what movie could be?
The cast is great and the performances are over the top. I loved the photography and tolerated the editing.
Now I have to go dig out my copy of the book for junior. He's in for a treat.
