kind of an expoitation flick more than anything - thats the good news!
Firstly I loved KIDS, it was really a groundbraking movie, disturbing,
memorable, funny (in a twisted way), thoughtful and had an important social message.
Now Bully, based on a true story feels more of an exploitation flick, nothing wrong with those movies, I happen to love them, but
was expecting more of a better ovrall story with more social context, it was believable but gratitious and you wonder why, the hell are we seeing certain scenes (one up a girls legs)
Still quite enjoyable, the dvd is adequate but not feature rich by any means, if you like exploitation, and dont expect anything too deep (and can stomach some disturbing imagery) you will LOVE this.
If your tastes are weird like mine, go for it! :)
Terrific ensemble of young actors.
I'm writing this review to give props to the cast of 'Bully.' These actors get zero respect in the mainstream press, but here they give us some of the best work ever put to film. Brad Renfro, Rachel Miner, Nick Stahl, Bijou Phillips (the bravest actress alive), Michael Pitt. These kids are the real thing.
Interesting plot line...disappointing delivery.
I saw this film on cable last night for the first time. When I read the the summary, it was enough to draw me in. "A group of teens lure a local bully to the woods and kill him." First off, with a description like this, one would think that the murder would occur somewhere between the beginning of the film, perhaps the middle at the latest. However, the idea alone of murder is brought up somewhere near the middle. My next copmplaint is that even though so much time is dedicated to showing just how "brutal" this bully is, however he hardly deserves death (I suppose others might think otherwise). So he hits his friend a lot. I don't think that calls for murder. Yes, he also rapes, but still. Jailtime, yes. Murder, no. Why these teens never went to the police, I'll never know. Or perhaps I dozed off when they discussed why they couldn't. The issue of moving is also brought up by the movie's main character, played by Brad Renfro, but the idea is shot down by his father. Again, it is just so tremendously unbelievable that an entire family with do nothing to interfere with his son constantly getting beat up. The writing is comparable to that of a high school stage production, combined with the sometimes awkward delivery of lines by unexperienced actors (some). I suppose my last gripe is the fact that these people, the main group of teens, all seem like someone we can say we have known. They all are very normal, but that is my point. These characters as they are portrayed, are not the murdering types. A surfer?? A stoner? A girl who looks like she is a big fan of fantasy and Lord of the Rings? These people, while they may be non-social, are not killers. They are not "disturbed" in the ways that those guilty of conspiracy/murder are. I have a feeling more people would enjoy the film "Big Bully" with Tom Arnold and Rick Moranis.
