Bubba Ho-Tep (Limited Collector's Edition) Reviews
Bruce Campbell proves he is the B-Movie King
Sadly, I missed the oppurtunity to see this movie in the theater when it fleetingly came by. It seemed like an eternity before it found it's way to DVD, but the wait was worth the while. The film itself is truly a piece of inspired originality: Elvis and J.F.K. still very much alive in an old folks home tracking down a mummy who is stealing souls from their fellow residents (yes, you read that right). The thing is, it works, and it works very well. After about ten minutes, you move into a true suspension of disbelief where the whacky plot seems to make sense, and you start feeling for the characters in the movie. You never for a moment believe that Bruce Campbell isn't Elvis, and as for Ossie Davis as Kennedy, he puts on a performance that will have you buying into conspiracy theories. The perfect blend of comedy and horror, this film also brings you into the world of growing old.
The special features, in addition to standard fare such as trailers, making of, and deleted scenes also includes one of the best commentary tracks to date: Bruce Campbell watching the film as Elvis that never breaks character. Also included is a reading by the author from the original short story that the movie was based from.
In conclusion, Bubba Ho-Tep breaks ground with an incredibly original storyline, and superb acting from not just Bruce Campbell, but the entire cast. The only reason I gave this movie a 4 and not a 5 was that A. It's not Evil Dead 2, and B. It does drag a tinsy bit in the middle, but that is overlooked easily by the great opening and climax. A movie that will impress B-movie, horror, and Elvis fans as well as anyone keen on cinema, Bubba Ho-Tep will be remembered as one of independant film's finest.
Walker And All, He's Still The King!
BUBBA HO-TEP is one of those quirky works of brilliance (like Spider Baby, Evil Dead 2, Donnie Darko, etc.) that make you scratch your head, while making you laugh and want to see it again. Bruce Campbell IS Elvis Aaron Presley! He's got the voice, the moves, and the attitude of the aging KING. Bored with his life as an aging rock icon, Elvis trades places (back in the 1970s) with one of his impersonators, Elvis tours as an imitation of himself, only to throw his hip out, sending him off the stage, into the crowd, into a coma; and eventually to the Shady Rest old age home in Mud Creek Texas. Now, instead of wowing audiences of screaming fans, Elvis finds himself bedridden and nearly fossilized. Then, a 3000 year old mummy shows up and starts thinning out the geriatric herd as it were. Joined by John Fitzgerald Kennedy (Ossie Davis), Elvis begins piecing together clues to unravel this Egyptian / Texan mystery. Can Elvis and JFK stop this shambling, musty horror in time? Can they keep it from sucking out the souls of everyone at the Shady Rest? Can they stay awake long enough to defeat this evil?? Watch and see! Highly recommended...
