Brother Bear Reviews

Superb Animation, Middling Story and Voices FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
Brother Bear is one of the three primary Walt Disney productions from the now-defunct Florida studio, the others being Mulan and Lilo and Stitch. Of the three, Brother Bear shows how the studio could handle more than the overly simplistic human faces they often relied on (to weakest effect in Mulan).

However, Mulan and Brother Bear unfortunately share slow pacing, sparse action (though Mulan's avalanche sequence stands apart as superb), dull humor, and an overall lightweight nature when compared to the '90s Disney greats. Middle child Lilo and Stitch managed more color and life (the spirit of Elvis mixed with creative sci-fi elements helped lift that film).

Voice acting presents an unusually mixed bag for a recent Disney film. Joaquim Phoenix deserves special kudos for a strong performance, but the child actor behind the younger bear was grating. The Lion King (which this movie hoped to rival) was similarly grating to differing degrees with young Simba and Nala, but those children thankfully mature into the vocal likes of Matthew Broderick and Moira Kelly. And sadly, the special features indicate the movie was indeed originally to be about an older bear guiding Kenai, not Kenai leading a younger bear throughout the film.

Other voices include Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis as toned down variants of the Strange Brew duo, drawn as moose. They helped inject some humor into the film, but only one line truly hit well ("I can't believe you totaled a mammoth").

While the movie is merely good overall, the DVD package is superb. Full of extensive behind-the-scenes footage and art, plus the full widescreen version on the 2nd disc. As stated, these guys really developed their art and animation...it is just too bad the surrounding script and some casting choices didn't match up.

3 stars for the movie itself. However, if there were a separate rating here at Amazon reviews specifically indicating quality of extras and DVD presentation, they would earn a 5.

Ultimate Family movie FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
I just saw Brother Bear 2 at the screening in Buffalo,NY and my three children really enjoyed it. The movie was exciting, thrilling and full of beautiful animation. The plot was well done and I had a tear at the end of the movie.
Overall, Brother Bear 2 is two thumbs up.
Another great Walt Disney movie
