the good and the bad of vampire films
This particular version of Dracula is both intense and sensual - two characteristics that are essential to any vampire film. The picture falls short, however, in its over-emphasis on sexuality. While the vampire mythos is filled with sexuality - virgins, midnight rendezvous, strangers who desire to penetrate you and give you their thirst for satisfaction - Stoker's Dracula lays its sexuality between the lines. It's straight-laced Victorianism hightens the power of the tale. This film fails to capture the spirit of repressed sexuality that is so a part of the novel.
It is probably also worthwhile to note that Keanu Reeves' performance is quite stiff, to say the least. It is almost painful to watch him (which should be an enjoyable experience). If there are any other fans of Monica Belluci out there, she plays one of Dracula's wives and looks stunningly beautiful, as usual.
This film is worth renting, but I probably wouldn't actually bother purchasing the film. It's really not that great. I would, however, reccomend dvd's from the Buffy or Angel series. Buffy has an interesting encounter with Dracula in episode 1 of season 5. Anyone out there with interests in vampire mythology and its relationship to theological questions should check out Dracula 2000. While it has a stupid name and can be a bit campy, it offers a good deal of intellectual stimulation.

great depiction
THis , i thought was a great adaptation of dracula. However, there is a bit of a lull in the second half. Acting is superb and storyline is great. Overall, a very good movie

Bram's Stoker's best
You can't go wrong with Drakula, and this is the best translation to film of Bram Stoker's Masterpiece to date.
