Blue (Three Colors Trilogy) Reviews

Can we escape life? FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!

Blue examines what happens to the heroine when the worst personal disaster occurs that one could imagine. She retreats within herself . . . wanting nothing more to live without attachments, friends or lovers. At first she succeeds, but life has a funny way of pulling us back into the thick of it. It's astounding how much feeling and emotion is transmitted by this film without dialogue. The symbolism of life is everywhere; Julie is bombarded by it. Take the example of the symbolism of the aged bungy jumper or tightrope walker on her mother's tv screen. The symbolic subplot of the aged woman trying to place the bottle into the trash is introduced, but, in Blue, Julie closes her eyes to the scene. Blue is the story of our interior emotions and how people can fold into themselves. The symbolic subplot of the musical score works well because it reveals Julie's emotional state: at first, she tries to destroy the music, then hears it played by a street flutist, and, in the end, she works on the score . . . symbolizing her character's change. Her inner state is also revealed by the beautifully filmed swimming pool scenes. Echoes of Kieslowski's No End occur in this first entry of Kieslowski's trilogy.

grief and chagrin, outstandingly portrayed FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
This is a brilliant film, about a woman whose life is shattered, first by untimely death and then but the discovery of betrayal. This is te best film of the trilogy by far, with outstanding performances by Binoche and others. This is a real woman, who suffers and learns to renew herself, through art and love. I was deeply moved by this film, totally drawn in.
