Blood Simple (Director's Cut) Reviews
Brilliant Debut by the Coen Brothers-ingenious black comedy!
There's nothing quite like BLOOD SIMPLE. It's a deadly serious, and at the same time frequently hilarious (in a nervous and ironic way) account of a couple of lovers, a cuckolded husband, and a sleazy private investigator who become inextricably involved with each other. The wonderful things about this movie include the raw brilliance of the Coen Brothers' feature debut, the crystal clear idiosyncracy of every performance, and the absolutely wonderful, suspenseful, surprising, and beautifully satisfying screenplay. This thing builds to a climax that will have you wide-eyed laughing and shaking your head in amazement. You must see this movie if you enjoy brainy, only slightly skewed movies with real originality and freshness in both the plot and the characters. A grand, riveting, fascinating, disturbing, surprising, funny movie about, of all things, sneaks, cheats, adulterers, and murder in a 'hick' town. You can almost feel the heat and swat the flies. A sure thing for those seeking something really original, but also jaw-droppingly ingenious and worth every minute of your time!
a simple story, a bit gruesome
I didn't really enjoy this movie. The story is of a love triangle that leads to a contract killing that goes bad. There are twists and turns to the story, but they are the only things that keep the story going and they didn't really seem that fascinating to me. The answers to the questions that arise are answered fairly quickly so there's not much tension or mystery built up. There's some gore. There's a pretty good joke near the end. It's a chance to see Frances McDormand, who I think is a really good actress, in an early role.
