Blazing Saddles - Limited Edition Collector's Set Reviews
Saddle Up
Mel Brooks's hilarious spoof of the western remains a comedy classic. Released at a time when the term politcal correctness wasn't invented yet, BLAZING SADDLES, lets loose and doesn't look back. Filled with uproarious off the wall humor, watching the film again, made me apreciate it even more. The late Cleavon little, stars as Bart, the first black man to serve as Sheriff of Rock Ridge. Gene Wilder is the Waco Kid, the deputy, Harvey Korman is Hedley Lamarr, a ruthless Attorney General, and the late Madeline Kahn is Lili Von Shtupp. The film has so many funny moments that pretty soon you'll forget all about the plot and just enjoy the film for what it is--a screwball comedy. The finale alone is worth the price of admission and will have you in stitches
I would like to join the others who have expressed their disappointment over how the film is treated on DVD. Warner Brothers need to release the film, intact, on DVD. Until they do that this version will have to do...This edition features the theatrical trailer, production notes, and a 55 minute audio commentary by Brooks that is ok but ends rather abruptly. It also allows viewers to choose between both Widescreen and Pan and Scan formats. Recommened but a better edition DVD is needed for sure...
One of the funniest movies of all time.
I can't believe an earlier 'reviewer' called Mel Brook's masterpiece of satire and slapstick comedy a stupid movie, while singing the praises of a piece of junk like "Scary Movie". Give me a break!! I guess the kids today can't see the hilarious absurdity in a bunch of black railroad workers busting into Cole Porters' "I Get A Kick Out Of You", when the idiot white cowboy asks them to sing him an "old n***** work song". Or Mel Brooks as an Indian chief who speaks Yiddish. I have to admit, when I first saw this as a kid, I missed a lot of that too. So hey, when you grow up, watch Blazing Saddles again, so you can appreciate it's many levels of humor. Hopefully you won't 'grow up' so much you that can't enjoy it.
In my opinion, this is Mel's second best film, "Young Frankstein" of course, being his best. Yes, the ending seems thrown together, but it's still fun, and everything in between is right on. The cast is great, especially Harvey Corman, Slim Pickens, and of course Madeline Kahn. And those of you who are offended by all the "N" jokes, they were written by Richard Pryor. This is SATIRE kiddies, it's not making fun of minorities, it's making fun of the moronic behavior of white people.
Get this on DVD, there's a nice interview with Mel and the film is beautiful in widescreen. DO NOT EVER watch this on TV, they cut out so much, it's not even the same movie. It's criminal! In the interview Mel talks about how, after screening it for the studio bigwigs, one of them pulled him aside and told him all the offensive things he would have to cut out(not knowing that Mel actually had final say). Mel jotted them all down, and when the guy left, he threw the paper in the trash. Good thing he did! This film is right up there with "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" as one that you can watch over and over and still bust a gut laughing. If you are among the uptight, humorless few that don't think this or Holy Grail are funny, boy do I feel sorry for you.
