Trying to hard to be quirky for quirkiness' sake
This might have been a better film, except that it reminds me a lot of the wise-cracking cut-up that always sat in the back of the classroom when we were kids: he always tried too hard for a laugh, and never knew when to shut up. So too is one left with the feeling that everyone involved in this film is trying so damned hard to make sure that every single viewer knows that the characters are a little off-kilter (but still have the same feelings & passions as "normal" folks), that they don't notice that we all got that point pretty early on. After a certain point, one feels like one is being beaten over the head with the film's rather ham-fisted quirkiness. It doesn't make for a bad film, but it becomes a "too much of a good thing" situation. I felt more manipulated than anything else.

This was one of the best Johnny Depp movies I have ever seen!!!!!!!!! All the actors were good, the story line was believeable. My favorite character has to be Sam, the way he cooks and does comedy!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved it!!!!!!!!!!

BENNY & JOON
This was an exceptional tender movie. I was pleased that it showed that people with mental problems can function and be happy. I was touched that it actually brought out the love aspect that many people don't consider in this type on genre.
