Batman Returns Reviews
Reviewer: Big Zach! NOT A KIDS REVIEW! although a kid.
This movie is Awesome! I love it so much it is very dark and action packed! It has a very great story and an excellent ending! The third best batman movie and one of the best superhero movies ever. I am a huge fan of Tim Burton and he this is one of his greatest films! The actors were great escpecially Danny Devito he was Perfect it was like he knew everything about the penguin! Michelle Pfeifer was great also she was everything a catwoman should have.
Revisiting "Batman Returns"
"Batman Returns" was considered something of a disappointment after the success of the original "Batman". Watching it again there is alot here to recommend. In the original film the look of Gotham City was as much a character as any of the actors. Art director Bo Welch picks up the ball from Anton Furst and has designed a look that is at once Capraesque and Dickensian slum. Michael Keaton digs deeper into the duality of Bruce Wayne/Batman and his performance is the better for it. I think alot of this has to do with him playing off his polar opposite in Selina Kyle/Catwoman who channels her dark side towards malevolence instead of good. Michelle Pfeiffer is excellent as Catwoman, at once sleek as a cat yet lethal at the same time. The major misstep in the film is the characterization of the Penguin. I do not blame Danny DeVito for this because he did not conceive this odiously freakish character or the prosthetics that he wears. This character just does not fit into the framework of the film and only detracts from the film's main story involving the Batman/Catwoman conflict. On the other hand, Christopher Walken as slimy industrialist Max Shreck does a memorable turn in the inimitable way that Walken excels at in a lowkey way and only a gray dye-job. Credit director Tim Burton who handed a franchise film did not take the easy route and attempted to inject some freshness to the film. While not wholly successful this is a good entry in the "Batman" canon.
