The Dark Knight Phones It In
Director Joel Schumacher is a semi-talented hack. Val Kilmer seems bored with the whole enterprise. Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Two-Face does nothing to distinguish himself except for an annoying cackle. Jim Carrey, while engaging, seems to have transported his Ace Ventura/Fire Marshall Bill characters into the Riddler costume. The garish art direction gave me a headache. Despite all that I still liked this film. Credit has to be given to a literate script that includes a contribution by Akiva Goldsman("A Beautiful Mind") that attempts to delve into the psyche of the Dark Knight. Chris O'Donnell gives a good account of Dick Grayson/Robin whose backstory eerily mirrors Bruce Wayne/Batman. It was also good to see the role of Alfred the Butler expanded and give the excellent British actor Michael Gough a moment in the spotlight. Not great but not bad either.
