Hey, Barfly . . .
I love you, Barfly. No, man, I REAAAAALY love you, you know? *hic* Like you're so damn awesome, and I really love you, for real, man. And I'm not juss sayin that. You're like, all awesome and stuff, you *hic* know?

You do not need to watch this movie....
All you need to do is to go your local bar and hang out there for several hours. After hanging out at that bar, go visit the residence of one of the regulars of that bar. Hang out at his/her place for a couple of hours too. You will basically see from that experience what you see in this movie. There, I've saved you a couple hours of your life and the rental price of the movie(or the price of the movie if you are going to buy it).

"Anybody can be a non-drunk"
Being a fan of Mickey Rourke led me to this film and Charles Bukowski. Of course, I've read and re-read the author's work and Bukowski wrote a screenplay which works. The movie shows something of his early life with a mix of fantasy through in. Really, I'm sure he wished Alice Krige would've come into his life-what guy wouldn't, but the fantasy and the reality of the skid row bum just comes to life.

Faye Dunaway and Mickey Rourke become the kind of people Bukowski lived with and wrote about all his life. The movie isn't about surviving on the streets, but about how to find some kind of success-some way to make a win out of a miserable life-bloody knuckles and all.

The one line I really enjoy is when asked why he drinks, Chinaski (our hero) response:

"Anybody can be a non-drunk. It takes a special talent to be a drunk. It takes endurance. Endurance is more important than truth."

And `Barfly' has both truth and endurance. The film can make people a fan of the movie and the man.
