Baraka (Special Collector's Edition) Reviews

A Gift of Heaven! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
This film has surpassed all my expectations. I don't find words big enough to describe it. To begin with, the technical quality. It's the best-quality DVD that I have seen in my life. This is not just a film, it's an art work and it has merited to get all the Oscars of the movie world that are available. The filmmaker combined all the qualities to make out of a documentary a truly divine creation. The content of most of the film is poetic. Many shots show religious rituals. And there's one scene that really stands out: the dancing derviches.

And there is something like a counterpart, an antithesis to it as well. It is those scenes that show modern industrial culture, people, and cars, in masses, and presented in high-speed in synch with a robotic music. These scenes are truly saddening in that they show to what point our modern society, be it Japan, be it the USA, has been 'standardized' and dehumanized. These scenes are like a subtle complaint, yet they penetrate right into the heart. What moved me most were little yellow chickens that are prepared for the cages, and that glide down, from one stage of preparation to the next, a sophisticated machinery of slides.

This film is a poetic vision of reality. The genius of the filmmaker, his grandiose way to see the world, is transmitted in an intimate manner, through landscapes, persons, sounds, a wonderful music, and a highly elaborate camera line. The camera is always used with the trepod, never free-hand, which makes for very calm and poised shots. The zooms are smooth and slow, the colors are wonderfully composed.

I have never seen a nature documentary where art and poetry was woven in the content in such an extraordinary manner. This DVD is really a divine gift for yourself or for any of your loves, including children. It's uplifting, it's poetic, it's spiritual. And it's the work of a genius. And the sound quality, unbelievable. I have listened to hit with the Grado SR-2 Reference Headphone Set. Perfect. And when you see the low price of the DVD, you may say 'I'll give that one as a gift to all of my friends'. I can barely imagine a person who would not be enamored with this DVD. Thank you so much! I would rate this film with 10 stars if I could.
