As good as the original....... FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
While watching the original Bad Boys recently, I was reminded of how much I have been wanting a sequal to be made. Luckily for me, it's finally a reality. Bad Boys 2 is a fun, loud, great looking, summer popcorn flick. Don't go to it expecting Acadamy Award performances. Don't go it expecting Michael Bay NOT to shoot the movie like it's a music video. And please don't go to it, if you have a sore abdomin, because you will be laughing for close to 2.5 hrs.

Martin Lawrence & Will Smith are back and they do a lot of the same stuff they did in the first movie. The villian (Jordi Molla) is a drug dealer trying to be the biggest extacy provider in the U.S. Along the way, Martin's sister (Gabrielle Union) gets involved being she is in the DEA. Many cars are smashed. Some buildings are blown up. Many bullets whiz across the screen. And many lines of hilarious dialogue are said. Like I said before, this is a perfect example of a huge, summmer popcorn flick. Michael Bay directs like he has a severe case of ADD. You rarely see the shot stay or hold on anything for more than a few seconds. It's almost hard to watch sometimes. But, he does make amazing looking movies. And he can film an action scene like nobody else. Some of the car chases in this movie are amazing. He just has a certain directorial style that you can tell it's him just from watching the movie, even if you weren't told the directors name before you started the movie.

Martin & Will do a great job reprising their roles. They have on-screen chemistry that two actors rarely share. They work off of each other brilliantly. When you see the scene they have in the electronics store, you have tears of laughter coming from your eyes. And they seem to know their roles very well. Martin is the little funny, family guy. Will is the good looking, muscle bound (looks like he really hit the weights for this one) action junkie that all the women like. Problems insue when Will goes after Martin's sister, however.

Gabrielle Union plays Martin's sister. She is a DEA agent working the same case Martin & Will are. She does a pretty good job in the roll, showing she is not just here for eye candy. Her and Will's romance doesn't hinder the picture at all (cough...Pearl Harbor....cough) and leads to some funny moments. The villian is also quite good. Jordi Molla was excellent in "Blow". When I saw his eyes when Johnny Depp put a gun to his head in that movie, I knew he would make a great villian. And he doesn't disappoint. He doesn't play it over the top, and has a certain voice and attitude that really goes over well.

This movie is great if you want to take a woman out on a date, but she doesn't like action movies. It's a bit long (at 2.5 hrs.), but this is the sort of movie everyone can like. It's got great action, comedy, visual style, and has two guys playing off each other better than any two actors I have seen in awhile. So go get some popcorn, snuggle up with your woman and enjoy the ride.

The DVD is a 2-disc set containing: deleted scenes, some production diaries (some longer than others), sequence breakdowns, a couple featurettes on the stunts & effects, and many trailers. There is also a Jay Z video here for those of you who like hip-hop. Not a bad set of special features. A commentary would have been nice, but sometimes those are overrated. Most of the deleted scenes are very short & just parts cut out of other scenes.

What Cha' Gonna Do? FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
The first Bad Boys film is your typical cop buddy pic. It is only the give and take of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence that elevate the movie beyond a Lethal Weapon rehash. The initial success of the original gaurenteed a sequel. But an imediate sequel was long delayed for several reasons, chief among them, the rising of megastar Smith and Lawrence's personal troubles. After more then a decade between installments, Bad Boys II, is here.

Narcotics detectives Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) are now members of a high-tech task force investigating the flow of designer ecstasy into Miami. This leads them to a conspiracy involving a vicious Kingpin (Jordi Molla), whose ambitions have started a turf war bloodbath. Mike and Marcus' working relationship is threatened when Mike develops feelings for Marcus' sister Syd (Gabbrielle Union). Unless the duo can put their personal issues aside, for the good of the case, Syd's life will be put in danger.

Basically a retread of the first film, returning director Michael Bay doesn't really mess with the formula. The action is a bit more intense, the stunts are more elaborate, and the explosions are louder. Writers Ron Shelton and Jerry Stahl rearrange a few of the pieces for the story structure--but the puzzle is the same as film number one. The interplay of Smith and Lawrence is there of course, but the cadence can seem off center and forced at times. That hurts the film a little but let's be honest, the movie doesn't try to be anything beyond what it is.

The 2 disc DVD set is loaded with extras. I have to say though, that most of it seems-uninteresting, I would have much rather had a an audio commentary from Bay, as he did on film number one. Disc Two: There are seven deleted that don't really offer much and were wisely cut. You also get featurettes on the film's stunts and visual effects. The six sequence breakdowns, including on-the-set footage, storyboards, and scripts is the most well realized extra. Which, in the long run, makes the Jerry Bruckheimer DVD staple production diary's 19 parts a bit excessive. Rounding out the second disc's bonus material is the usual theatrical trailer and a Jay-Z music video, for the song "La-La-La" from the film soundtrack.

The Bad Boys sequel will leave you with a feeling of deja vu and I can only marginally recommend it

Bad Boys II is the funniest sequel, so, far, this year! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
Martin Lawrence and Will Smith return in their roles as the mismatched narcotics officers Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey in this hit sequel to "Bad Boys". This time, they are after a esctacy dealer, played by Jordi Molla. This sequel runs near 150 minutes long, making it extremely long, but this time this sequel doesn't overdo it all the way like another sequels have done in the past. Also returning are director Michael Bay and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, only missing this time from the producer's circle is the late Don Simpson, but it is still under the Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Films banner, which was a brilliant move indeed. Joe Pantoliano returns as Captain Howard, who gets stressed out every time that Marcus and Mike end up doing something extreme. Theresa Randle returns as Marcus' wife, Theresa. Gabrielle Union is Syd, Marcus' sister. But what Marcus doesn't know is that Syd and Mike are seeing each other. Columbia Pictures, again, the first movie's studio, is doing the sequel as well. The movie is extremely brilliant and purely smart and funny and it is better than the first one by over a mile. The music is increasingly better than the first movie's music. The story and screenplay is extremely witty and brilliant and much better than the first movie's story & screenplay. The costume and production design is extremely refreshing. The film editing is perfect. The cinematography is excellent. Go see this movie now! I mean right now!
