Babylon 5 - The Complete Third Season Reviews
Steadily Good and Sometimes Great
The third season mostly continues with little change in quality from the second, both for better and for worse. It is, of course, necessary viewing for anyone who has seen the first two seasons and fruitless for anyone who hasn't: if you're thinking about watching this series, go ahead and start from the beginning (and ignore those who counsel starting with Season 2; yes, the first is quite lower in overall quality, but still necessary viewing to the series).
Aside from simply saying "well, it's as good as season 2" let me make a few general comments. I am now convinced that the show uses its guest actors as a sort of works program (I'm serious about this). I don't mean the semi-regulars, like Koenig's great turn as Bester or the spectacularly evil Morden, but the one-shot actors. They are so often awful that I can only conclude that they have their jobs for some reason other than their acting; likely it is to "give them a chance" in some way.
Marcus Cole and "the rangers" are a bit too homage-y to Tolkien, though I admit that Cole's quirky, semi-serious personality has grown on me over time. Ivanova continues to be the weakest of the main cast regulars and Londo and G'Kar continue to be the strongest. Lennier and Vir have both become very enjoyable characters in their own rights, and Sheridan has hit a stride and become enjoyable. Maybe I was wrong to say that Sinclair would have been better in the long run.
And speaking of Sinclair: excellent writing job to tie up all of those loose storyline ends from the first season. It almost makes it seem planned that Sinclair would leave after the first season, though I know that can't be true.
The main strength of this series is the long-range planning and progression of its main plotlines. This show rarely has an episode that stands out particularly on its own merits, but the power of its on-going plotlines like the corruption of Londo, the redemption of G'Kar, Earth's fall into fascism and the romance between Sinclair and Delenn is truly astounding.
Overall, I say: keep on watchin'.
