Auto Focus Reviews
Tremendous Acting
Dafoe's portrayal of techie, John Carpenter, steals the show in this film which effectivly captures the downfall of a downright perverted creep.
Kinnear is believable as Bob Crane, from his Catholic family man beginning until he's on top of the world and being lured into the world of infidelity and hardcore porn. The most chilling moment comes when a washed up Crane who no longer hides his lust for perversion, tracks down his teenage son, checks out his son's girlfriend and has a "man to man talk."
Very interesting, sad, and well made film here.
Good...For a Biopic
One of the better bio-pics to be released, "Auto Focus" tells the story of sitcom star Bob Crane, better known as Hogan from Hogan's Heroes. This movie is much better than a lot of biopics, but still has the same kind of feel to it. The performances are great, the movie has a sleek and cool look to it,
it's a good, but slightly flawed film. Greg Kinnear plays Bob Crane, a radio talk show host who lands a part on Hogan's Heroes and becomes an icon. During this fame, he divorces his wife (Rita Wilson) and begins hanging out with John Carpenter (Willem Dafoe), no relation to the famous horror film director, a video technition for Sony. Bob and Carpy, as Bob affectionately calls him, begin picking up various woman using Bob's fame and eventually even begin taping the escapades. Meanwhile, Bob marries his co-star Patti (Maria Bello) and Hogan's Heroes ends it's run...At this point, Bob's life spirals downward with the sexual activities taking over and virtually destroying his life. Kinnear plays the part of Crane excellently, playing both the lighthearted and funny side as well as the dark haunted side. The best performance in the movie, however, is Willem Dafoe who is at his creepy best as Carpy, Bob's best friend who might be gay. Anyway, I don't think this is a spoiler...But, as most of you know Bob Crane was murdered and it's one of Hollywood's Mysteries. I resepect this movie because it didn't implicate or even imply who the killer may be. We see Crane die and we hear a voice over narration about the events. This final scene is oddly chilling and would've been more affecting without the voice-over, but it still works. Although these aren't really the best movies to compare it to (they're completely different) but this movie, as a bio pic, is better than films like
"Ray" and "Walk the Line" in the fact that it doesn't have the same weird feel to it and everything. Anyway, whether you're interested in the Bob Crane story or just want to see a good movie...This is it.
