The Politics of Film
Interesting how so many of the comments are not about the film itself, but about the self righteousness of perceived truth.
One thing for sure, this war, what led up to it, the consequences that it had for the people of Cyprus, is truly a forgotten place in world history, very few people know that it happened and what really ocurred.
For that, this film has value, and whether it pretends or not to be a sole source is perhaps not important--any film will represent a point of view.
Was it a good film as a film? I found it interesting because the topic is interesting, and there should be much more visibility of what happened, to both sides, during and after the 1974 war.
My perspective on war is this:
I was in a restaurant during the Falkans War, they announced that the British had just sunk the Argentinian Cruiser, and 800 Argentinians had died. The room erupted with cheering.
My companion, who was from Cyprus, said: "But think of all the mothers"
The room went quiet.
This film does the same for me, for the people who suffered on both sides.
Like always, the Turks are the "barbarians," killers, rapist...etc.
What is this about???
Like the movies/books about the fake genocide on the Armenians or about Izmir where the "barbarian" Turks did all the gruelsome stuff. Of course, we are bad...we are monsters, you know (I am being sarcastic).
I am a Turk. My parents were alive at the time when the Turkish Republic of Nothern Cyprus was freed from "Greek nationalist" who currently are still free from the crimes commited in the 60's and 70's (the genocide on Turks on the island of Cyprus). No showing of the dead Turkish bodies (kids, moms, sisters, grandpa's filling the bath tubs full of blood). Let me ask you, how can a Turk trust a Greek in the island of Cyprus??? This happened "only" 40 years ago. People remember it. There HAS to be a two nation state on the island of Cyprus.
It is all to well known that the winners always write history the way it pleases themselves. If Turkey was so bad and barbaric then she would have taken all over Cyprus. But it did not happen because we recognized the Greeks living in the Greece Republic of Southern Cyprus.
And what is this non-sense talk about that Turks blocking the talks for the UN etc??? At the referendum from the UN the Turkish side said yes and the Greeks said no, remember???
Totally biased dudes. We as Turks do not preach hatred and do not want any new anger and hatred to be spread out. Let's work together for peace. Let's have a two nation state on the island of Cyprus, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Greece Republic of Southern Cyprus.
